My first job was in a bank as a methods analyst trainee. But I had the privilege of learning computer programming for free right in our office. Our computer was an IBM S/370 with 144 kb of memory and the hard disk called IBM 3340 disk pack has a capacity of 70 mb. It's funny because when we bought our first desktop in 1993, the system disk also has 70 mb of memory. Anyway, in the decade of 1980, the archiving was done in a tape reel with a drive that is as large as the washing machine. But the largest equipment is the 1403 Printer that can print 132 characters per line. Those were the days when the computer system is confined to the computer room that is air conditioned that needs at least 20 degrees centigrade. Those were the days of the olden digital technology.

The old days 🙂 ANd people used them allot and it does the job of what it needed to do back then.

Until now I couldn't come to terms that our office's IBM was running an online system that connected 32 bank branches. It has only 144 KB or memory but running on virtual mode using the 70 mb secondary disk. I'd say that our systems administrator was very competent technically. The programming language they were using was Assembler. But I was learning COBOL. By the way, the medium to enter data was the keypunch cards and later we shifted to diskette but still using the keypunch machines.
