I am interested in creating a website that provides icons for the community, such as iconfinder.net, iconarchive.com, etc. But I dont really know how I would do it.

In order to make the site, would I need to make everything from scratch or is there some script out there that already has images, a layout, etc?

This is just for my knowledge, as I would just like some general information.

I was looking for exactly the same thing earlier today, but i didnt get anything.

A gallery software could do something like this. http://gallery.menalto.com/ has comments, search, ratings... the whole lot.

Hmm, idk if sites like icon finder uses a gallery. :S

Sites like Icon Finder pay people to make software such as the software.

Yea, I could do that but theb what about the images, how will i display those?

Hey

I'm the owner of Iconfinder and I just found this thread.

The code behind the site is custom made. I doubt you would get a good result by using gallery software, but using a framework such as Zend or CodeIgniter for PHP would be a good idea. I have not paid anybody to code the site, since I'm a programmer myself. The difficult part is probably no the code, but instead building and optimizing the database and of course getting a large user base.

You're welcome to ask me questions about the site and how to get started.

Best regards,
