I am running a forum and it is based on my region. Haven't got any new members and it is performing poorly. What will be an ideal time to close a forum. Lets say 6 months give a run and if doesn't work out try something new or close it down?

I'd be willing to take over your databases if you really want to close your sites.

As far as this post goes. I don't think there is a "Good time" other than the time you, as the owner, feels it is right to close it.

I think you should see how it goes for a while, and if you have no luck, then try something new instead. If that doesn't work out then maybe it's best to give up or pass/sell the forum to someone else.

I think it's really up to you when to close the site. I would give it a few more months, but it really does take time and hard work to get a site going. If nothing changes perhaps you could pass the torch to someone else. I wish you the best of luck with your forum though, and I hope things change soon.

I personally feel, for new forums, closing them earlier is generally better than letting them linger with a small number of posts per day. If you aren't getting activity, members are unlikely to signup. It's a cycle. You should give it a big push and see if you can get the activity of the board up. If it doesn't work out, close it.

what is usually "if the time is right" for a forum?
I know forum's lifecycle is fluctuating alot. So how do you guys give it that big push?

My hosting will end in 3 months as well as my domain in December. So till the end i will try my best to bring members and make it active. If nothing works within these months i think it is time to take a good decision.

Have you tried promotions? Try some social promotions and some forum postings. I hope that will help to get more members to keep your forum running. Also you can hire a moderator who can make some discussions active for running the forum successfully.

I have done few, thing is the forum is based for Indians. So if other country people come and chat it breaks the purpose.

Like many say it is a personal decision. If there is no one else you trust to pass the site and there is not interest to keep it alive, specially from yourself then put it down. You can always save the database in case you change your mind at some point.

For me the right time is when you feel you have done all you could for it and have come to realise the place has become an obstacle for your own good. I don't mind I spent over a year trying to get my forum up at the time I still had a vision for it, I really don't think you should give up simply because masses haven't flock in half a year. It is more a signal that you might need to change some things around to try to offer something new or better than what could be your competition.

If you as the administrator no longer have the drive or the vision to carry it on and there is no one you can trust to keep the place going then there is little point on keep putting your time on it.

Then the idea is to to promote to your ideal audience. Maybe joining indian groups in facebook, blogs could help. It sounds to me like the audience is there but it hasn't been made aware of the existence of your community.

Thanks for the tip, i am trying the promotion via my Facebook friends and commenting on few Indian blogs. I will increase my advertising in few more areas to attract people and make my site existence to my fellow friends.

Best of luck with that.

Another tip a friend gave me was to go to Yahoo answers, search topic related questions, give valid answers and link to my place in the source. If it isn't spam and they can genuinely benefit from your place that is another measure to spread the voice.

Here I searched "indian" so you can see if there is actually anything relevant. It is sorted by newest but you can check the relevance, most answers, fewer answers tabs instead. Anyway, even if you can't find something to answer it might spark more ideas of what people are looking for.
Personally, I don't know your place but if it had articles to dispel myths and misconceptions or explain in detail Indian tradition chances are I wouldn't only grow interested in checking more but I could even end up sharing those articles if I enjoyed them so that could be a way that you could take advantage of non-indians visitors without compromising the Indian culture you prefer.

Once again, I hope your place gets closer to your vision. 😀
