Idea's for a sucessful forum?

I have never had successful forum, anyone care to share idea's on running a successful forum. What are your tips and tricks?

Write in proper english
Don't spam your link to your site
Ensure your site doesn't have a bad reputation
Ensure you join in with conversations as people don't like quiet admins who only post to ban people
Always advertise and advertise in every way possible.

Also make sure your forum is there for a purpose. There's no point in making a forum for the sake of it, it must serve some constructive purpose.

For example, it could be a chat forum for a specific TV show, it could be a support forum for a product or service you offer, it could be a place to chat.

Just remember to keep it unique and do everything Fowler mentioned above.

Dont steal forum ideas from other either. Its fine if they offer suggestions, but as of this moment in time it appears I have the only humor forum online. Theres jokeforum.com, but guess what...they dont have a forum

Try to be original, think up ideas on your own. Sometimes they work, most times they dont.

Yes, if you can find a unique topic for your forum you will most likely be successful if its a popular topic. Always show dedication and promote the crap out of it.

People these days give up if very easily.

I have only just got mine online, it's not actually viewable to people on my site yet but i thought this was pretty cool.
