The Australian online retailer Kogan.com has introduced the world's first "tax" on Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) browser.

Customers who use IE7 will have to pay an extra surcharge on online purchases made through the firm's site.

Chief executive Ruslan Kogan told the BBC he wanted to recoup the time and costs involved in "rendering the website into a antique browser".

The charge is set to 6.8% - 0.1% for every month since the IE7 launch....

I think it is a funny and probably an effective way to get people to upgrade.

They should put a tax on every IE version honestly... I was forced to use IE one day and it only crashed and crashed, websites looked all so weird. Loading times were countable with years. And it was the latest IE.

It's beyond horrible.

Wouldn't it just be easier to stop support for IE7 and leave a nice message saying this website is optimized for X browser...

At the same time though, this could be a good effort to get people to upgrade.

I think this is good source of additional revenue for him, and would encourage people to upgrade to the latest version of IE, or switch web browsers. Most internet savvy people will probably just use Google Chrome, or Firefox to go on his site if they don't want to upgrade IE.

I wonder how much more money is he making from IE7 and below users from his IE tax. This can be good for the government since he also has to add the money made from the tax to his income tax form as additional income thus he has to split part of his earnings with the government since his IE tax is also taxable because it is a source of revenue.

I believe in the article it said he is making close to no money through this tax. Instead, his IE7 users are shrinking.

I personally love this guy. xD

It's cool because that's 3 percent of users that will have to pay more. I don't see any disadvantage.

The new IE is okay

I agree IE9 is okay. I used it a few times, and it works pretty good. I like how easy it is to disable un-needed toolbars, add-ons, and more for faster start up.
