Wish I'd only known how saturated the general chat forum market was before opening my own general chat forum. Or, how hard it was going to be to get new members. Many people will pick a favorite chat forum and stick around there and refuse to hop around to other chat forums. Next time, I will choose a very specific niche, not general chat. What are some of the things you wish you had known before you began your forum?
Everyone says their genre is so hard...
Doesn't matter where it's gaming, promotion, general chat, roleplay, business, whatever. It's no different no matter which genre you pick.
Getting members is difficult. Nearly every site struggles to get more active members. Whether you're a fairly broad site covering lots of topics or a super-specific one. It's just part of owning a forum.
One thing I'd like to have known before starting my forum though...
CSS... Along with some design theory on how to make a good looking theme.
Would have been nice to have that a bit earlier. So maybe my first few themes wouldn't have looked like utter crap.
If you've got a following on twitter or some sort of social media, or another forum/blog, it can be pretty easy to get something started up. Because those people are interested in what your up to.
However, starting something like a general forum without a following is definitely a hard one. Its the same for a gaming forum. I have started up a new one recently and without telling anyone following me about it, I was hoping it could get some search engine traffic to drive in new registrations. It hasn't kicked off yet.
