Do not even bother making a forum.

If you're not creative enough to even brainstorm your own domain names, and require other people to do so for you, then just stop now. Log off, and go learn to play badminton.

Creating a domain name idea is the basis of creating a forum and or a website, the domain name represents your site and your content (not always though). You never see the documentaries, or Q&A with successful sites where the question is:

Q: How did you come up with _________?
A: Well, I went on Forum Promotion, and since I was so lazy not to think of a domain name, I instead offered people fake money in return for some ideas.

If you can't take the simple (and most enjoyable) task of thinking of a domain name, why should you even bother developing a forum? To choose a domain name isn't hard.

1. Think of your content.
2. Add a generic term after one of the word (or not generic, your choice).
3. If you like the domain, awesome, if not, start from step 1 again.

If (like I said above) you're too lazy to not do such a simple step, and clearly have no opinion and or perspective (since you can't make up your decision), then you have the slightest chance of creating a successful forum, since:

1. You can't make up your mind.
2. You have the creativity of a gold fish.
3. You're obviously insecure about your decisions. Administrators/Managers MUST be confident with their actions.

Why waste your time? Other members tim-... Oh wait, they're getting paid! Yeah, and why waste another $10 on a domain name.

I have to say I agree with what you have posted. Excellent read!

At first when I saw this I thought it sounded a bit rude, but then I read it again and it really makes perfect sense. Questions like, "what domain would make the most sense for my forum?" are just downright stupid because you should be able to go on a site like GoDaddy, browse through their selection of domain extensions, and brainstorm a list of your own ideas of what you think sounds the best to suit your site's needs. When we were brainstorming ideas for Chatting Time, it was obvious that Chattingtime.com sounded the best vs. say, chattingtime.org, because we aren't exactly an organization so to speak, we're more of a commercial site, just a place to hang out and kill some time. So really, the overall bottom line is, it's YOUR forum, not ours. A lot of us have our own forums to think of, and we don't have time to run around practically baby-sitting everyone. So really, think this through and start coming out with your own ideas, rather than having some of us practically run your forum for you.

Exactly, the first glimpse of a forum owner I get when they ask such a question is one who closes it down after 3 weeks. Thanks for the feedback.

I actually don't fully agree with those views. Someone could be very good at running forums and making decisions but still appreciate creative suggestions on the best domain name for their forum. Multinational companies will often commission very expensive research before deciding on a brand name for a new product, there really is nothing wrong with that. If it works for major corporations, why shouldn't would be forum owners seek suggestions and advice from others before deciding on the name of their site?

Personally speaking I feel that one of my weaknesses in the past was trying to do too much myself, without getting advice and help from other people. Now that I'm older and more experienced I try to get suggestions and feedback from as many people as possible and IMO that approach works much better. Two minds are actually more than twice as good as one. So if you want suggestions on a domain name ask for them, I believe that you will be pleasantly surprised by the ideas you receive, that you may never have thought about on your own.

When you want to name your forum, take lots of time out and come up with at least 30 variations. You will find loads will be taken anyway but without a large range to choose from, you are limiting yourself and may end up with a lame name.

When i have created forums i have spent ages looking for domains - i had thought of tons of good ones but none were available so getting some help from others isnt always a bad thing

That would be a more accurate reason to ask for help with a domain... If you know what you want your forum to be called, but you don't know what extension would go well enough with your site's name, and you've done as much homework as possible, then it would be an okay thing to ask for help.

I agree with this completely 100%. Very good statements and valid points.
