If you had to make a new forum gain 1,000 active users in 72 hours how would you do it?

First they need to get passed registration 😛
Very few forums use manual approval, mass registering, mass confirming email, then mass spamming is a trivial task in most cases. A targeted attack also works on forums using manual approval.

Ah, great question. Well there are ways to do this. Legal and correct ways. Not involving bots, fake accounts, etc. Here's a list:

1.) As you've probably seen on the news, there are people who use social media to organize and mobilize everything from protests to wreaking havoc at shopping malls, to actual fist fights. I imagine such power could be harnessed to get a meager 1,000 sign ups at a forum or message board.

2.) Another way would be to offer a cash prize of some kind. Most likely, $1,000 since you're aiming for 1,000 sign ups. The 1,000th sign up would receive the money to their paypal account.

3. If you're deep into a gaming community or one of those hidden online spaces - and have lots of pull or juice with those people. They could spread the word and you'd get your sign ups.

4.) A wild publicity stunt involving someone wearing a t-shirt or holding up a sign containing the forum url - in a highly populated area. Once it hits CNN and other cable news outlets, you're on your way to reaching your goal.

5.) If you know a famous person and maybe they owe you a favor, or are very close with you? You could politely request them to hit up their social media followers to visit your forum and sign up. Or do a vlog with them where they give out a secret about an upcoming project. Then host the video exclusively at the forum, behind a sign-up-to-view window. This would work well for example if the famous person revealed a small spoiler about a new STAR WARS or MARVEL movie. This would also work with a gossip show like TMZ, if you could get them to shout you out on air. Probably would never happen but we are theorizing here after all.

Spend a lot of money to run CPC campaigns on Adwords and Facebook (only if I have much money 😀)

Start by having a good amount of forums, premium theme, customize plugins based on my niche, and probably tons of ads on social media, etc. Might actually involve having some generated likes on social media etc. to give more trust, and have fully unique content related to the niche.

These are some creative ideas. 😀 You've really put together a well thought out post. 🙂

There are other ways you could do it as well. Giveaways and contests combined with some publicity is another way of doing it.

You'd need to have access to a social media presence (FB, Twitter, YT, or IG).

When I ran forums back in the day, I could only manage 200+ registrations on my website, took 5 days to reach the 1,000 mark. That website was based on a popular game. My recent forum what I closed earlier this year never surpassed the 300 mark.

Alot of effort needs to be put into forums, the design, the genre of the forums, the team, advertising is massively cruicial if you want to gain 1,000 in a single day, so you'd need to buy premium ad space.

Popular YouTube, Twitch channel. Tell your followers to signup on your new forum. Bam. You just got 1,000+ people. That's if you have 1,000+ subscribers or followers, active and actually join your new forum. 😛

Keep the forum simple, focus on the content, and plan the launch to happen around the time of some big release/announcement from something tied to the forum's niche. (A new highly anticipated game release for a gaming forum, a new album from a well-known artist for a music forum, etc.). Have a short-term contest/event with a giveaway of whatever the newly released thing is or some sort of exclusive item/content related to the release/announcement for the most active person in the 72 hour time frame.

It's possible to do this, certainly. Perhaps more so now with the way trending/viral topics work on social media. Make use social media, trending topics, etc. and you can likely do it in less than 72 hours even.

The trick will be maintaining the activity after the fact, that's the harder part.

As told by @Jordan , you need to create lot of hype before the launch of forum. Promoting your business among business and creating interest among people will help you get large number of users. Content is another point that can help you in this regard.

It's simply not possible. I mean, not mathematically - unless you're paying (with some reward or money).
