If you're not planning to invest...

I completely disagree with that. You don't have to spend money to be dedicated. Just because you have a paid host or a paid domain doesn't mean you are more dedicated than someone without. I agree with everything Brian Fan has said, forums on a free host / domain can be successful.

Also, most free hosts are bad and unreliable

There are plenty of good reliable free hosts. Sure there are some bad ones but Zetaboards is great, rarely have any downtime and tons of features. I hear Jcink is great too although I've never used them.

Having paid hosting really doesn't make it any easier to attract members either. Most people don't look at the host as much as they do the content, appearance etc.

No offence, but most people using free hosts wont get successful.

Click the link in my signature. 😉 I can link you to a hundred more successful forums on free hosts if it will help. It's really about how dedicated the admin is, not what host you're on.

Okay, this topic really needs to be locked. The OP has loads of people who feels differently than he does, yet he still stands by what he says and because of this, this topic is getting out of control. I, for one, don't ever want to see a topic like this again. This topic is too controversial to even be allowed. We all have different opinions about what makes a successful forum and it's obvious that the OP does NOT respect anybody's opinions.

Some people also agree with him (to one extent or another). I don't see anything that bad in this topic to warrant removing it. Fair enough the first post could have been written a bit better but it has led to some useful discussion. You just seem to feel the complete opposite of "The Elite" but that doesn't warrant removing the topic because of it. If everyone has a civilized debate in this topic and not get upset and acting over the top then I see no reason why the topic can't keep going.

The Eleite is a Arrogent, Middle class 'Forum snob' who has had everything paid for, You dont know what work Is, obviously you expect everyone to be financially well off, dont know how hard it is for some people to earn that, when they have other prioritys. (living etc)

Also you want me to pm you, becuase you cant take my true comments in public?.

Zetaboards and forumotion are exceptions, other than that most other hosts are unreliable, and you too are an exception. Your forum is successful IMHO on a free host, which I do commend.

Woah, many that disagree me, and more that do agree with me. On this forum they won't, since this is a completely different market than the one I belong in, sorry that I questioned your perception. I don't respect anyones opinions? Lol that's funny.

LMAO. Everything paid for, how would you know where I'm from, what I've done. Your speculation is based on some of the most flawed logic I've seen. My parents have NEVER helped me with my forum, nor with my funds or anything. I haven't been lazy, I've learned and I've worked hard. I never wanted you to PM me? True comments? Your comments are intriguing and negligible at best.

EDIT: Ahhhh! Just realised why you don't like me. You can't afford things that I can and therefore got offended, I'm sorry you dislike that I work hard for things...

By providing users a small forum, you should have a reliable shared webhost when starting. You can't just start a forum with the mentality, "I'll buy a domain and hosting if we get big", sadly, that's not how it works. You won't get big without prior investment and effort on your behalf.

How is this even wrong? I'm so confused!

Come on Dennis, show some respect. You may not agree with The Elite but at least be classy enough to not throw around insults as they just turn people away from agreeing with you because of the attitude conveyed. Just because he doesn't agree with you does not mean you have any right to insult him or anyone else.

I thin the biggest problem with the first post is it doesn't leave any room for exceptions as it ignores and argues against their existence. Even if a line of logic works a lot of the time, there is always going to be some point where something that is completely against it actually works too. It doesn't mean either opinion is flawed but that there is exceptions to it that exist and much be acknowledged. Not every paid self hosted forum is going to succeed nor is every free remote hosted forum is going to fail. While it might seem like it is always going to be that way, there is always going to be exceptions to both.

I love you.

Im sorry reguarding my previous post, I wasnt feeling/thinking my best. 🙁

I'm just going to stay clear away from this post now. I understand I overreacted and I apologize for it. I've been doing good about not letting people's opinions get to me and I am not starting now. You all have your opinions, I have mine. I'm just going to not reply to this thread anymore and just leave it alone. Something I should've done in the first place and I realize that. Once again, I apologize for behaving like I did...I still have a tendancy to sometimes let things get to me and I don't know why it happens, but I'm leaving this thread alone now. I know I'm at fault and I probably started the argument. Again, I apologize and am leaving this thread alone now.
