So my business partner and I decided to make a free forum and blog host for my company, funded by an advertising network that is currently in development over at my company.

Thinking of making it based on MyBB 1.6.5, but also thinking of waiting for the 2.0 release or doing a rewrite based on our own framework. I'm thinking of the rewrite, but also considering the fork of MyBB 1.6.5 for the reason that it might make converting my own forum easier.

However, it must also be considered that my company will be running a relatively slow Internet connection compared to other hosts, such as Tumblr (blogs) or Zetaboards (forums), and thus we must make the software very fast.

Also, I'm considering a system where users would have to register on the host instead of on every forum/blog they join. Everyone I've spoken to thinks that it's a neat idea, but I'm not quite sure about it.

Thoughts? Especially those thoughts about starting from a framework (i.e., Yii, Zend) or basing it on MyBB are wanted, along with those on which framework to use, if any.

(My company went unnamed in this topic because we're currently deciding on a renaming, just so you all know.)

Basing it on MyBB is pointless since MyBB has nearly all of it, additional features would just be suited as plugins.

He asks about basing on MyBB and making a free forum host script like Zetaboards, proboards, Forumotion, etc.

Its a good option though. 🙂

Yep mate +1 for it. Add as many plugin on your own and also provide the option to generate backup so that people loves joining it.

Yeah, we plan on doing backup.

Every six hours, a new backup will be made. Once five backups have been made, the oldest one is deleted automatically. Therefore, forums have four backups at any given time after they have been up for 24 hours. This should be enough, right?

You're more than welcome to join the AeroBB development team, if you have any experience with programming/design.
We're a bit into development, it's really hard to start up in this industry.

No, thank you. Although I will keep the offer in mind for if I want to base my software on AeroBB instead of MyBB. I'm new to PHP. Not so new to programming (C/C++) though. But I hear that PHP is easier, so I might as well try it, especially considering the general commonality between programming languages.

In any case...keep in mind that my forum host will have blog hosting as a service, too.
