Some only turn to religion while in prison, when getting dumped, when losing a child etc. However, that shouldn't be the only motivation. Well, this reminds me of how spiritual people are 9/11 etc., but then "back to sin normality".

Is the role of pain too much a factor in religion and does it make it a crutch?

But that's just it isn't it? It's a "religion". There's all kinds of reasons why someone picks up a religion or quits supporting one.

I don't think pain is a crutch. Bottom line, rock-bottom is what most people need to change. Pain can do that.

Well, "religious barbarism" was mentioned. But who's to say that Jesus Christ didn't approve of religious hypocrites. Christ, himself, was always sparring with religious teachers who didn't like him.

People change all of the time. Some change for better or for the worse. Pain can go either way. It'll motivate many people and it'll make other people give up. People process differently.

Moving on with some hate in your heart isn't good at all. At least religion provides a good example of forgiveness. So many Facebook posts with angry exes whining about their past, lol.

Another reason I had to get off of Facebook. A few girls I knew that I had added were always making posts on their wall complaining about a cheating boyfriend or were posting about a new guy they just got with. It got pretty old because it was someome new every other week or month.
