How do you deal with your Inactive Members?

My community has allot, over 21 members. Most members come on post then that's it.

I don't mind. I'm not going to tell them off for it. If they don't come on, then they don't come on. You can't force people to come on and be active.

One of my staff is talking about it. Do you think it might make the forum bad?

You could start sending those "We miss you emails" until the member gets annoyed, blocks your forum's email address and never logs in to you forum again. 😛

That will make it worse 😛 But good idea but don't want to get my messages block from there end

It might when some is appearing to review your site. It could be in terms of statistics.

Then it might not be, getting Traffic and active members is what bayside hasn't go

These kind of emails actually do bring back some users. The ones who have no interest will block the email correct. But those users would never come back anyways, so the positives out weigh the negatives.

Not necessarily. I'll use myself as an example. I was really busy at one point in my life and I was thinking of resuming activity on a forum I was a member of when I had some more free time. During my busy time I was sent those "We miss you" emails incessantly, it annoyed me to the point that I blocked the email and never went back. I'd rather spend my time at a community that doesn't possess the stench of desperation.

I just sent an email to all members 🙂 just hope all gets it since most of them all unsubscribed.

Well that too, I'm also like that for most forums. but it's hard for the owners

Do any of you ever remove inactive users from your forums?
I just removed about 800 people who have not been online for a while and had 0 posts. Most of them are bots though.

Edit:
I would like to clarify as I am the Forum Technician, I did this on one of my forums not on FP

Makes sense for bots, definitely. As for my community there aren't any bots 🙂 all real people.

There are some that used fake email address that only Las so many hours. But that's all

I don't mind if my forum isn't very active. gives me time to make any needed updates to posts, etc. It's all about patience which I learned the hard way when I first started out.

I got patience, It's just been so long, It's not months!! It's been near to two years..

patience is starting to run away from me lately. Maybe doesn't help since one guy is keeping at it

How many members do you have? Maybe it's time to hire someone staff for extra help? My situation is different as my needing staff is more health related than anything but even a person who is totally healthy can always use extra help.

Had this conversation with one my staff, and what I said to him that! It's not easy. Total (of) over 160 members (no bots) and for some time now, that I'm looking for more staff. It's open 🙂 just had no one interested. I'm still waiting on two users to get back to me.

I think it depends. If I know the inactive person, I'll send them a text/IM message, because I know who they are and we're comfortable talking to each other. If they're a random person that I've never met, I'll just let them be. As @Packie said - you cannot force people to be active. I also think that this needs to be said: the thing that you need to learn the most is why people are going inactive. If people are going inactive, that sucks for your forum, and you need to learn how to fix the problem before more people leave. From what I've experienced, most people don't mind sharing their opinions with you if you ask them nicely.

I have sent out emails with the option to unsubscribe, but those emails were also directed at old friends who had not signed up to our new forum yet. Some have unsubscribed and that is fine. You don't want to annoy people with that though. I have blocked things that I was interested in because they were mailing me every fricken week.

On the new forum, there are 240+ members, but I know a bunch of those are people who came over from the old site, are no longer interested in anime etc, but still want a connection to a community that they invested more than 10 years in. Deleting them would serve no purpose. I find that those people who were once super active sometimes get re-interested and come back to posting after a year or two. Even if they don't, it's nice that they care enough to pop in once in a while.

Even with a site that had 120,000 members, I think honestly, our active memberbase was about 5,000. Over the years, people go inactive and new people join. You will have a number of loyal folk who will stay active from day one. When I sorted people who had posted in the last 4 years (out of 14 years) and had 50+ posts, there were only 2,000-ish. Forums aren't as popular as they once were, so we have to accept that fact. If I did that in the first 4 years of the site, I am sure the ratio of active members would have been so, so much higher. You would also have to consider that the number of signups would have been significantly less than pre-2006. (That is not including the 800,000 blocked bot signups since late 2013 XD)I am sure that FP being a large active site has similar stats. It's just not realistic to expect every member to be active. It won't happen. ^^
