Is there a way to increase traffic to a forum without spending money? While I don’t mind spending some, the main concern I have is having my real name, personal info out there. I am not techie whatsoever & terms like SEO, I do grasp, but to go about it where it would be beneficial is beyond me.
What do you do to increase traffic to your forum or site?

You could join Quora or something similar and answer questions about your niche. Put your credit details as your forum.

You'd have to be an active contributor.

The internet is too oversaturated, and forums have lost many of their previous oomph. So, you got to work for it.

Establish a presence on social media, build a community, and go from there with promotional content.

Guest blog on blogs featuring your niche and link to your forum.

Post exchange more often.

That's a start.

Getting traffic is not important, but conversion is very important. If you could make money then hire some moderators and posters so it keeps on increasing.

My best suggestion is check webmaster tools that how many visitors are coming through search engines and ranking keywords so you can increase for that.

Posts exchanging is a short term so you have to depend upon real posters who are looking help from you.

Focus on getting ranked on search engines. If that happens, you will get traffic. Quora is a forum type site, see how the posts get ranked on search engines.

Finding ways that are free and simple to do to increase traffic to your site is always an added bonus and some of them are not too difficult to do yourself at all. Things like being part of other communities and having a link back to your site in your profile or even your signature are great ways to increase traffic to your site. Many people allow the advertising of at least one link which is always great especially if you are an active user of the community. Guest blog posting or even being part of blogs and also being able to leave your link somewhere there is also a great way to increase your chances of traffic. All are free and whilst they may take the time I always say that good things always come to those who wait.

Here are a few tips for increasing traffic to your forum website:

Promote your forum on social media platforms and other online communities. This can help expose your forum to new users and drive traffic to your site.

Participate in other forums and online communities related to your niche. This can help establish you as an authority in your field and drive users to your own forum.

Optimize your forum for search engines. Use relevant keywords in your forum titles and descriptions, and make sure your forum is mobile-friendly and has a fast loading speed.

Encourage users to invite their friends and colleagues to join the forum. This can help grow your user base and increase traffic to your site.

Consider running contests or giveaways to attract new users and encourage existing users to invite their friends.
