For the time being, I have the infraction bar shown on both posts and profiles. Should the bar be shwon on posts? Or should it just be shown ona member's profile?

Well I think it should only be shown on their profile. It really is embarrassing if you do have a warning and its exposed to everyone. But, there is a good side to that. They follow the rules!

As far a forums...

Scolding somone in public as a sort of show or public display shows immaturity on part of the scolder.

If you are scolding someone in public as a way of boosting your own ego, shows even more immaturity on your part due to the fact that at the end of the day its only a forum.

Usually these type of people are kiddos who've never worked a job in their life and feel the rise of power as their ego goes up everytime they waive the ban hammer or warning bar around on thier forum...let alone one run on a non-top level domain.

You could teach both in private and public, though when issuing warnings and scoldings...doing so in private shows maturity on your part.

I don't think they should be shown in public, it is kind of humiliating to a certain extent for your private business to be shown publicly, a lot of well respected members of communities often have a daunting past even if they are top notch users now.

Pretty much everybody has something on their record somewhere and if records of warnings for things were shown in my profile anywhere for anything, even minor things like making short posts I will most certainly leave that forum for good because it makes people treat you differently, like they don't trust you.

Reminds me of a site I used to frequent that's no longer up. They had a thread in the off topic section which they made like a list of members and their punishments. Like if they were temp banned, they would say, "so and so has been banned for 3 months for such and such reason". Yeah, like any of us need to know that. Really, just have a banned rank if you want to show your forum that someone has been banned or suspended, and that'll clear everything up. Infractions and bannings of any kind should only be between the staff and the person who committed the offense.

Thank you for all the tips, everyone. 🙂 As of now, I am going to remove the infraction bar from posts, and only use a "Banned" rank publicly.

Yeah a banned rank would be the best bet. Really, your whole site doesn't have to know what a person did wrong. A person's punishment for a rule infraction is private, meaning only the offender and the staff knows what's going on and why a person is being punished to begin with.
