I've followed all the steps here... http://xenforo.com/help/add-ons

But every time I go to upload the .xml file it says the files cannot be found.

Is this a common problem? is there a glaringly obvious mistake i've made?

You need to upload the package to your file manager before uploading xml file. If they are in the wrong place, it won't work.

Sorry if I wasn't clear Ace, I have uploaded all the contents using FileZilla first and then gone to install the .xml...

What add on are you trying to install?

You need to make sure you have the contents in the "upload' or "files' (people call it different names) folder in the proper place. They may not all go in the root directory, they most likely go in a sub directory or there are several pieces that belong in different sub directories.

When you upload the XML in your ADMIN CP, make sure you are using the browse button to upload from your computer and not uploading via URL (the second option) unless specifically told to for a particular code.

Finally, check your download and see if the code creator included a README or Install document that would have more detailed installation instructions for this specific add on.
