How have internet communities helped shape your real life? Have you learned any new skills you've been able to carry over to real life? Has the internet had any impact at all on your life?

Nope, I'm just as much a <number of choice words> in real life, as I am here.

So, nothing you've done on the internet has helped you in some shape or form offline? Being the same on the internet as you are offline isn't exactly what I'm asking.

Not as yet, no. Still in "an uncertain limbo".

Definitely. I learned how to program during highschool 100% using the internet. Around the time I finished highscool I got an around the year internship which I still have today. If not for the internet, I probably wouldn't have a job in the industry I want to work in. Heck, I might not even have wanted to work in that industry if not for the internet. 🙂

It has definitely helped me decide what I would like to do for a possible living.

I am much better at cooking with the internet then I was before! I'm always finding cool recipes to try on Youtube and other cooking websites. I love it.
The internet also helps me keep close connections with family and friends who live far away at a much cheaper price.

I can't tell you how much I've learned! I'm currently working at a warehouse out of town, and I've been working on an Excel spreadsheet inventory system. I've learned so much about formulas and such, that generally made the system easier for supervisors!

I've also learned everything I know about HTML from the web, and that's only a couple examples of the knowledge that I've gained with the Internet.

A forum that used to be really popular helped me decide on the career path I'm taking right now. If it wasn't for that forum, I wouldn't be doing so. 🙂

People on the internet helped me have faith in humanity but also destroyed it many times xD

I think Internet has helped me in quite a lot of ways. It has helped me in my language, the way I think and most importantly, in bringing a certain level of professionalism in all tasks that I carry out.

It also helped me in forming my own views on certain fundamental questions like creationism, God and even aliens. All together, my rational views has matured quite a lot.

What's this thing called "real life"?

The internet has shaped most of my life, to be quite honest. The "dirty mind" that the internet gave me, it's given me somewhat of the ability to handle a social life, not much though. THe internet is my social life.

Fun thing that dirty mind that it helps one develop. 😀 Especially when it causes you to go to the weird section of youtube at 1-2 am in the morning.

The Internet definitely has given me the opportunity to learn how people act in various types of social situations though. For example, someone may be serious in posting on a forum, but may be more light hearted in chats like skype, and inbetween the two extremes while on facebook.

I would have to say yes the internet has definitely helped me acquire skills applicable to real life. Typing for instance... in the workplace I am faster than my co-workers when it comes to typing so essentially they admire my ability to work fast. 🙂

Management is another skill that the internet has allowed me to practice e.g. time, patience, contacts, etc.

Does the internet take me away from real life? Of course it does! There is a balance required between internet life and real life. We are not meant to be immersed in our computers every single day but at the same time hey it's fun! 😉

I'd say yes. Its taught me a great deal. Its given me new perspective on the world. 🙂

Being an admin online has made me much more of a leader in real life. I also learned how to code in part to make stuff for one of my early website projects. These are both skills that are incredibly valuable. If you can learn how to be a good enough programmer and designer, then people will really respect you, particularly if you're young. Most people at work assume I'm about 3 to 5 years older than I actually am, and it's all because I learned to code really early, and spent a heck of a lot of time doing it. 😛
