Introducing Project Loon: Balloon-powered Internet access

Re: Introducing Project Loon: Balloon-powered Internet acces

Actually, other companies are giving away the free computers, not Google. 😉 Take the Raspberry Pi Project for example, they have donated a lot of their £20 computers to schools in the poorer places in Africa etc. to provide them with a better education, and if this new Google idea does work it will help further their experience.

They should build out more google fiber. 🙂

I read somewhere that like 1/3 of googles projects fail.

I'd ask you more questions, but I'm sure you don't know as Googke hasn't said much.

Judging by your name, I assume your animosity comes from your devotion to apple products. Nothing wrong with that, we all have an opinion, yadda yadda yadda. However, straight up denying google is doing something at least interesting here seems a bit of a stretch.

Your first point: Google is wasting money, as they always do. What? If you were a multi-billion dollar company, I'm sure you would be doing similar projects. And honestly "waste" is such a loosely defined word, at this juncture it does really substantiate any kind of point.

Next you discuss how since computers aren't free, google fails. This is like attacking any industry trying to make things cheaper. Let's go with a department store. They are having a sale! But the clothes aren't free, so they suck. Right? Same path of reasoning. It is a valid concern, however not really something you can attack google for, because they have made advances in this area(chromebook for one) at making affordable tech solutions for all.

1) Google fiber is an ENORMOUS undertaking; very hard to grasp how impossibly careful google has to be. So, while I too wish for google fiber now, I would rather wait and have an awesome and stable product as opposed to google rushing things and messing up.

2)A 33% success rate on new projects is pretty amazing for such a vast company. Think about all the projects you've done, maybe in school, maybe in business. Think about their success rates, as opposed to the amount of energy you had to put behind it. If google devoted their entire workforce to a project, it would be done very quickly, and have a much higher success rate. But since google tries new things often and is trying to make tech in this world better, they have vast numbers of teams working on vast numbers of projects. I'm honestly surprised it's a 1/3 success rate!

Honestly, think about this kind of thing before you make blind accusations.
The benefits of this product alone are at least worth hearing more about it.

I'm not denying that its interesting, I'm just saying it won't work.

1) Google doesn't have to be careful. Just deploy the fiber and do everything they did in KC, Texas and Utah.

2) Not really, it's better if you do something right and if works, rather then putting lots of stuff out and hope it sticks. Look at Apple. The only thing that I can think if that didnt go we'll was MobileMe, and they rebranded that to iCloud. All of the projects I do in school are a success.

Google needs to make this easier to access if they want to work. And if they are using standard 3G technology then it will have a hard time reaching to earth.

However, I do see this work good on airlines!!

I'm sorry, but Apple don't really innovate much. The only real thing I can think of is the iPhone, which as far as I can remember was actually the first proper smartphone. However, everything else has been more or less copies. Mac OSX - Windows was there first. Tablets - already done, just not successful. All Apple ever seem to do is make something look nice, and sometimes they even fail with that. Even iOS is copying things now - look at the multitasking screen for iOS 7 and compare it with Android 4.1's; I think you will find they look surprisingly similar. Let's not stray off topic though. 😛

On topic, I really do hope that even if this project is not successful, it makes the basis of a new project that does work.

Not wanting to derail the thread, but Mac was around since the mid 80's. Wothout the iPhone/iOS there wouldn't be today's Android. 🙂

Computers- Apple made one of the first computers that you can use at home, and has a GUI.

Tablets- Tablets hasn't been around for years, while they were out there, Apple invented this market for them. The market of thin, powerful devices.

And I don't know what Android 4.1 looks like but I'm sure iOS 7 multitasking works better then Androids. Plus, Apple is just extending the current multitasking

Not to go of topic or anything, just wanting to clear something up.
I looked at this "Multitasking" and I must say...Blackberry did it better.
They have a true Multitasking experience on the PlayBook.
Blackberry didn't do it first either. WebOS from HP did it first.

Anyways back on topic:
This looks like an amazing idea. I hope it is a success.
Anyone have news on the speed? or what the price might be?
I'm guessing it's going to be something like dish(just based on the received type install) that it would cost around $70ish for the service a month.

You realised they started making in Android in 2003 right? So you're wrong, if there was no iOS Android will still be around. In 2005 Google bought Android Inc and then it was released in 2008.

I would say the iPad is probably the only thing Apple has done right. It's good, but with the way iOS is, they might as well sell it with a padlock, because compared to Android it's locked down. You could even skin Android to look like iOS if you were crazy enough to want it, but without jailbreaking you can't customise iOS.

Unless Apple relearn the word "innovate" they will be dead in a matter of years. The iPhone has hardly changed since the first one and at least with Android there's a range of phones to choose from.

Having used Android and iOS 7, I can say that Androids works a lot better.
