I normally do, they are weirdly hard to make so I tend to keep it short and simple, and I have actually used that method before. Unless you make an introduction thread, your account could not be activated. We didn't have email activation open, because honestly, we had better spam filters on our forum that would check those introduction so it balanced each other out.
I think it's common practice to introduce yourself to the community, it just feels weird if you get into the posting right away. At least then, others know of your presence and at least a bit about you. I generally post an intro topic with a few details, straight after I join.
I almost always introduce myself when I join a new forum. Simply, I like to make my presence known and give the new community a sense of who I am and what I do. Usually, it's the first thing I do when I join a forum.
I usually introduce myself if the thread or board is available. I usually write a lot as well, hoping to find others that share my same interests. 🙂 I'm fairly social, I suppose.
I even introduce myself in my own introductions board on my own forum so members can know me better. A lot of forum owners don't do that on their own forums and I think they should consider it in the future. 🙂
I always like to see members posting an introduction with over 500 wards, it feels a wast of time seeing and thread with one small line, just saying about hello i'm new and I'm.. so and so.
people have an choice to do an intro or not, i'm not forcing them, some do an intro after they made over 50 posts. I haven't made an introduction on my community.
I do in fact post an intro on other forums that I do exchange with or what ever, and I try to post over 200 wards and tend to not copy and past the same on all websites
I have an area for introductions, but we do not require people to post there first to activate the rest of the forum. However that used to be a good way to get spam bots - or where it was obviously a spam bot.
I always make an introduction first after I join and get a signature and avatar set up. It's always nice to feel welcomed.
I've also seen where a forum didn't have an intro area per say, but they did have a singular topic for people to introduce themselves in. Which I can see that being an okay thing - keeps it all in one little area at least.
I try to get people to interact with others on my site as a job of building a board better known for having a great community and spirit rather than having unique content, since a board which has this unique material and has a horrible or nonexistent community of users is worse than one with no meaning but with spirit.
Most of my old ways of introduction was to copy and paste from another site however I constantly change it or find errors or outdated info in them, especially if I go on to use a new alias or something.
I'm fine with people that don't introduce themselves as long as they don't act like robots.
I normally don't unless I'm doing an exchange or something. I'm just lazy. My introductions normally feel awkward, I dunno if it's just me or not, but I honestly hate writing them. If I know a few members of the community already, I might introduce myself.

I always try to introduce myself before even THINKING of posting else where. On my own forum, I do have an intro section where members can pop in and introduce themselves to the community before posting else where if they wish. I've registered on forums in the past where, once your account is validated, you're forced to make an intro before posting anywhere else on the forum. This always has irked me to no end.
I always desire to formally introduce myself to a community. It is a formality I have always preferred. I do not feel it should be made mandatory, but I personally desire to make myself known to a community in hopes of being offered a warm welcoming and an opportunity to meet new individuals. I still feel despite the PC age we live in, there is always room for basic human standards of interaction. Greeting a new person to almost anything is typically practiced in the real world. Whether you're meeting new friends or a new neighbor, it's always nice to formally say your name and shake hands. Except, we are not shaking hands, perhaps exchanging a "Hello and welcome", which suffices as a handshake or other form of greeting.
It's a great way to break the ice and to feel at home. I view it as the front door to entering a discussion community. I will always have an introductory forum on the discussion board I plan to launch in the near future.

Yeah, I usually post introductions on any forum I join. If I am doing an exchange I often even include the introduction as an extra post just to be considerate. I think it is proper forum etiquette to do so.
