IPB Licence fee Increase!

Crazy how the forum software costs $100 and yet the renewal fee isn't that far off from being half that cost @simonweb I mean $190 a year comes to $280 a year for me since I use everything for one site. OMG, why.
Yeah, the new price structure does not make sense for non-commercial sites and businesses if you use all the official apps. I can hardly justify the blog and gallery apps now, which is a shame. And the Pages/CMS app is pretty neat, but do I really need it? Hmm... 🤔

to cut cost, look at apps that you do not need

What I find surprising is that IPS still haven't sent out a new mass email explaining that they've backtracked from their earlier plans. You'll only find out why the old 6-month renewal periods are still active by browsing their clients-only forum.

Oh wow that is a big increase indeed 🙄, I wonder if XenForo would do the same..

Yeah, that was the first increase in ten years and was after they offered a discount for upgrades.

I know right, I always read their forums. The only way to know what the flip is going on.

Well, IPS isn't really known for clear and concise communication - which this mess has clearly shown us haha 😉

At first I thought this increase of price was madness. But now, I've bought a license and I understand the price you're paying.
It's an extreme quality software. It's a bit expensive? Yes, especially at the beginning as you have to put in a lot of money in a short period of time. But if you really like forums and websites, it's really worth it.

It is their very first price increase since they started. Also after 7 years of renewing your licence can add up to a far bit of money Xd in the long run. Most IPB sites tend to not last after a while or they moved to a cheaper option, unless thy have good membership funding support

It's an excellent piece of software. And if you run a successful community which pays its own bills, then it's a no-brainer to use IPB. But for everyone else, it's a pretty steep price increase, which can be hard to justify.

It's funny that IPB was once free software, but now it's among the most expensive. I would use IPB over XenForo personally, but I still prefer phpBB.

Free, I never known it to be free

Wasn't it called Ikonboard or something like that back in the days when it was free? I think it was only the very first 1.0 version of IPB that was free after they re-branded the software.

Ikonboard, I thought they ended, IPS was created in 2002 by Charles Warner and Matt Mecham, which at the time they had bought the forum software Ikonboard from Mecham. Their first product as IPS was the forum software Invision Power Board

IkonBoard (or iKonBoard) was the product Matt used to be the lead developer for, it was written in Perl and owned by a different company (Jarvis?), but Matt wanted to go a different direction, write the software in PHP and I think had a falling out with the owners, so he started Invision Power Board, a free PHP forum software. It remained free until Version 2.0.
