IPB vs VB

I've never owned a license for either, but I've always preferred the layout of IPB over vB. It's just nicer, sleeker and easier to get used to for those coming off of Invisionfree (IPB 1.3). I don't like IPB3 though.
What don't you like about IPB 3?

vB is a business host i think.

IPB is a play-about-host if you know were i am coming from.

IPB is probably the easiest thing to mod and theme. As Ghost said vB is stuffed with useless tools that will never be used. Every year vB prices go up and the guy who made it is obviously like Mr.Crabs out of Spongebob(lol). Also the themes on vB are well et's put it this way i cant describe them any were near beautiful, really. Yes you could grab a code of vB and edit but it is hard to edit vB i think. Also i think that IPB comes with convertors to all board hosts an vB doesn't, correct me if i am wrong.

Overall i prefer IPB.

To tell you the truth, ever forum system is easy enough for someone to upload mods or skins. I always thought it was hard to upload a skin or mod. But, I first tried uploading a skin on phpbb, and it was even easier than installing phpbb. But, when it comes to mods on phpbb, they are little more difficult (The File Edits -roll- ). I don't know what you mean by "host", but IPB is easy to upload skins on. You just dl the skin and then upload the file and then the images.. and your done. I have never tried to upload a mod onto IPB. If I ever become staff on a forum, I might try that one day. But..Your completely wrong about vBulletin. Also, it was not "one" guy who made it, it was a team of experienced staff who know what they are doing. How come the team is like Mr. Crabs?

Back onto skinning and modding. I have tried vBulletin before. I have helped a few people out with there forums. Uploading a skin is a short and sweet process. You just log into you FTP, and then go to the images folder and upload the folder that has the name of the skin on it. After that, you go to you ACP, and then you go to "Styles and Templates" and click Upload/Export Style (Pretty sure that's what it says). Then you just upload the .xml file. Modding on vBulletin is the easiest thing you can ever think of. You only have to upload 1 file. That's it..1 file. Of course, you can still edit the settings through the vBulletin options..but it's as easy as that. 5-7 mods can take you less than 5 min to upload.

Anywhere near beautiful? They are pretty good skins in my opinion. What made you think that? There are skins that are professional, and some skins that are just for fun. IPB, phpbb, and any other forum software has great skins. There is no doubt about that.

@Lawson
The way I see it is that both IPB and vB are paid software, and thus both can be presented professionally, or presented like anything else. They both allow extreme customization, and look good with the many skins out for them. I lean toward IPB more simply because I started out with InvisionFree, a IPB v1.3 host, and loved it.

@Havok
Mr. Krabs has a team of employees working for him, right? -lol-

I'm sure you'll have time to 'play' with one of GWN's IPB forums soon enough, as i'll have demo's I can run with them (have at it lol). MODs on phpBB3 do suck, but hopefully (HOPEFULLY) this start a hook system sometime soon, like vB has.

What don't you like about IPB 3?

The fact it looks ugly to me and it looks more like its trying to be Zetaboards...if it ain't broke, don't fix it -_-;

I agree with you on the look part..It really hasn't improved in my opinion it's gotten worse..They are copying off vB with the built in reputation system also.

I wouldn't use the term copying, because after all, it was a MOD that has been around for a long time. When phpBB gets a built in rep system, are people going to say it's copying? Probably not... because it's free software.

I havn't checked IPB3, so I won't comment on the design or look.

Not exactly copying..But still. You know what I mean 😛

IPB are taking a different approach to the reputation system, it is not that similar to the vB one. How is IPB trying to be like ZetaBoards? They are implementing a lot more web 2.0 and social networking aspects, thats a big plus plus and vB wil lcertainly copy soon -lol- Just like the profiles.

Vb and Ipb are probably one of those "it comes down to personal preference."

With that being said i have to say vB is the better of the two. Vb has its better features then ipb while ipb has its features that are better.

There are just 2 things that won me over.

1. Vb's community of support and their support they personally provide. Both types of support are great and really can't be topped.

2. Vbulletin is run on many of the major forum sites. There is a lot of huge forums that use vbulletin. Most notably is the www.teamxbox.com which is owned by ign.com. So basically that is was has won me over.

of course it comes down to personal preference.

I will have to say though.. vB 4.x series is supposed to be nicer..

It will have to be to beat IPB 3
If they make it nicer, will they be raising their prices again then? ~lol~ IPB has gotten loads more users sinc ethey last raised their prices, greedy companies.

I have read a thread recently (leaked from the staff room at vb.com I think)

There is going to be massive changes to the licences when 4.0 gets released.

For this reason I will be making a move to IPB once my VB Licence runs out but the only thing i do need is a points/cash addon and a shop.

the other things don't matter

I just love IPB way better than any other website making System. Even more than phpBB

I do like them both but since i use VB im going to have to say VB just because you can literaly find any mod you can think of for vb on their mod site www.vbulletin.org
