I am starting a forum and considering which forum license to purchase.

I am considering between IPB and Vbulletin.

I am judging based on:

1. Design
2. User friendliness
3. Modifications

Tell me which you think is better.

If it was me I would go with XenForo, but since it is a choice between IPB and vB I have to say IPB.

vB is ugly.. not very user friendly and confusing with lots of pointless and insecure modifications. The management of the software only care about making more money and people are migrating away from this dead-end forum software in flocks. Since the new ownership most of the staff that helped shape the software have resigned.

IPB is user friendly and has some nice modifications available. It is more modern compared to vBulletin and they are focused more on the end user rather than the contents of their wallet. This forum software is heading in the right direction. It looks and feels ALOT better than vB.

Both to me feel bloated and flat, I would personally go with XenForo if you have the funds to go paid.

I suggest you do some heavy research and try online demos etc; to find out which one suits you best and feels the best. Asking on forums will get you nowhere because most recommendation are only based on peoples own preferences and will differ a lot.

Good luck and I hope you make the best choice 🙂

IPB all the way. vBulletin has many security issues where as IPB does not. IPB is also sleeker looking then vBulletin. The latest version of vBulletin looks like it belongs in 2006 where as IPB is the future. 🙂 IPB also has many different official add-ons you can purchase such as a Blog, Gallery, CMS and web store. Not to mention the slew of modifications and additional free (and paid) non-official addons being offered at the IPS Marketplace and various other sites around the web. vB only has vBulletin.org for it's modifications resource. 🙂

I'd pick IPB just because of how user friendly it is. The ACP in IPB is much easier to navigate & use than the one in vB. Almost everything in IPB is a lot more user friendly, because vB is mainly for the more technically inclined than IPB. The IPB stock skin looks a lot better than vB's stock skin. vB is used mainly for really professional forums, in my opinion, whereas IPB is used more for the community based forums. That's just my two-sense though. 🙂
Good luck with whatever you choose. 🙂

IPB has consistency unlike VB.

When you see VB, some of their versions will be really good where some are worse. Whereas IPB never got a bad release (full of bugs and vulnerabilities) as far as i know. So go with IPB.

I used vB in the past but converted to IPB and its been great ever since! Lovely software I must say.

I'm neither a fan of VB nor a fan of IPB. But i find IPB's admin panel more easier than VB's.

You make one mistake and then you might have to do everything all over again.
It depends on what the mistake is. If the mistake is like deleting the database, then yeah! We will need to start everything all over again. 😛
But that generally applies to all Forum softwares, and that's why backups are important.

VB:
You might think it is ugly but has thousands of themes: PureVB, CompleteVB, the ones from vbulletin.org and many others from other sites too.

VB and IPB have equally good availability of themes. I wouldn't say which one is better based on themes available, as design is not much based on software, but on the designer himself.

Also you ever think there should be something changed or added then just suggested in vbulletin.com and people will vote for it and if they like it they will add it.

Suggesting features exists in all Forum softwares (as far as i know).

I'd have to agree with shady here. Xenforo is so much better, and so much faster! Users are liking it more and more every day, and it will only be a matter of time before one of yours asks for XF 😉
