I'm making a new forum via IPBFree because I don't have enough money for IPB of vB and don't like ZB or IF. However, I think I might get money in the next few months or so, and might want to switch to vB, but you can't convert between IPBF and vB. ;|

What should I do?

Work for the money and then evantually tally the money up til you have enough, or you can create a phpBB board and convert it to IP.Board but then to vBulletin, that's the only way I know.

IPB Free is known to have a large number of exploits for hackers.

MyBB, phpBB and SMF are probably your best bets for free software. Also, IPB Free isn't supported in any case.

vBulletin's culture is horrendous. Their support in four of my five support requests did not help me at all. Now, under Internet Brands, they've been ripping off their users by making them pay for insecure bloatware. Don't believe me? Check these links out to see for yourself. For crying out loud, Kier Darby is no longer on that team (former project lead), and the fact that he left signaled bad things to come for vBulletin.

Yes, I was a vBulletin user myself. To be quite honest, my most successful forums were run under MyBB, which is a free, open-source software. If you really wanted to pay, IPB is a much better option. Its latest version (IPB 3) has definitely improved from IPB 2, adding more features while making the package lighter. Its support team also fixes your problems for you, as important or everyday the problem is. I personally find MyBB and SMF your best options to start off running a forum.

Nope. You can't convert posts from IPBfree to anything. One reason why it's best to just create a new forum before you get big.

You could use this to convert to phpBB or SMF, then convert the phpBB/SMF file to IPB.

My friend was able to move his ProBoards forum to SMF forum. I'm in the middle of trying to merge a Forumer and Zetaboards forum onto MyBB (going to have to convert them both to SMF or Phpbb first), so I'll let you know how that goes. 😛

On Nintendo Addict? That's because those forums act like separate categories split into subforums. If you enter the forum, you'll see the topics/posts for the subforums.

Proboards just displays them differently, but the posts are still there.

I meant your ProBoards example. Do you know of any example of a conversion from IPBFree to SMF/PHPBB?

I don't have any examples off hand, unfortunately. I suspect it would have been tested thoroughly though.
