For those of you who dont already know, 2 weeks ago the Swedish government proposed a bill named the private Police Act. Right now youre thinking, "and why do I care?" Well some of you may not, but for everyone that uses BitTorrent sites, this may be your only warning.

Details:
* Movie and record companies will have the right to call out the name behind the IP address if they think that someone fileshare illegal.
* Internet service providers must divulge the name, or the get a fine if they don’t cooperate with the lobby organisationes.
* The movie and record companies will get the right to build databases with personal IP numbers and names to administer threatening letters and lawsuits in large quantities.
* Torrent-trackers (such as the Pirate Bay) will be fined every time they refuse to cooperate and provide information about users.

I dont know about you, but I use trackers such as The Pirate Bay all the time. Im not saying I download anything illegal, but I still dont want my information spread all over the web. If this gets passed into law, were all screwed. Movie companys can call us on the phone and question us. What kind of madness is the world getting to?

So its right for movie company's to gather your information, even if you dont download their movies? Its right for anyone in the world to know what you online for any given reason? This would release your personal phone number to anyone posing as a rep from a movie company, and your ISP would be forced to give it to them. Is that what you want? I know people like The Pirate Bay may stand for alot of illegal stuff, but they are also protecting our freedoms. They started a uncensored blog service call BayWords that allowed anything to be posted. Now of course there were some who took it and made it bad, but some used it (and still do) to allow their voice to be heard, free of censores place by our government. I live in the USA, which used to stand for freedoms, but I am no longer allowed to speak my mind in public. I cant say certain things about certain groups without being attacked, and even jailed. Do I like TPB for their free stuff? Sure, but they are also the sole symbol of freedom in this corrupt, censored world in which we live.

The ISP's will only give out the information if they think you have been downloading stuff, they are not allowed to otherwise as you have not been breaking the law, and it would be then breaking the law giving out the information without reason.

I am not worried, I pay for all my songs and movies. But if people are "stealing" off them, then that company has the right to take their information and prosecute.

Ah, but you dont understand. By passing this law it would give the company's the power to demand the information form any ISP, weather they have a case or not. The Pirate Bay uses a system where they insert random IP addresses into the seed lists to prevent company's from randomly stealing them. If a company logs on and collects 5 IP addresses, theres a chance 3 of them could belong to people who have never been to TPB's site. If this law is passed, and a company steals a list of IP's, and YOUR IP just happens to be in it, then the company has the right to your information, even if youve never been on a BitTorrent site in your life. Now do you see the major issue here?

That is the issue at hand. New Zeland just passed a 3 strikes law that is killing off internet users there (Theyre all getting caught and having their accounts banned...) so its really 50/50 at this point. You can keep yourself updated with the most up-to-date Torrent news here,

The bit i dislike is the "if they think" bit as you might be doing nothing wrong and they suspect you and get your info. Fair enough your ISP would hesitate but if they get fined for not co-operating and no doubt they will get loads of these requests a day they can't investigate every report to see if the user is doing anything wrong.
