My domain name is due to expire in a couple of weeks and I'm thinking of just renewing it with Google Domains. However, I started wondering if it would be worth shopping around for a better price than $12 to renew for another year. Before I dived in, I figured I'd post and reach out to the experts on here and get your feedback.

Is $12 a pretty average cost for a domain renewal?

Domain renewals often cost more than the original registration because the registrar realizes that it is a hassle to transfer out (most people cannot be bothered). $12 is not unreasonable but you may save a few dollars by using a transfer coupon. Namecheap's are here: https://www.namecheap.com/promos/coupons.aspx. They are offering: COM Transfer $8.84 + $0.18 ICANN Fee.

P.S. Having your domain with Namecheap, Name.com or Godaddy offers a lot of advantages if you ever need to sell it (most people have accounts with those three registrars).

I don't plan on selling my domain any time soon. So I may just bite the bullet and renew with Google Domains just so I don't have to learn how to transfer out. Next year I might want to save a few dollars though. (We shall see.) Thanks for the advice. 🙂

$12 is around the industry average. There are some cheaper and some more expensive, but charing $12 is not too much at all from any registrar. Sites that are much cheaper than that probably make their profits through upselling or shady business practices.

Good point. 😉 While we're on the subject though... how does one go about transferring to another registrar? Is the process particularly challenging?

It takes a few days to process, so it's rather annoying. But not challenging no. Unless, the registrar wants to be difficult which I've had happen before. As long as they're reputable you'll be fine.

Create an account on the registrar you want to use, then initiate a transfer. You'll have to get a code from your current registrar to complete the transfer.

At least, that's as far as I remember it. Haven't done it in years.

Hello,

from my experience I can tell you that 12$ is a perfectly reasonable price 🙂
most web hosting have that price, so I can tell you it is a good price, even if I never tried Google domains (not available in my country sadly)

Cheers

I would say so, since at the end of the day you should be in the positive range of profits when you renew (maybe not the first time but the second time for sure) through selling products, ads, and more.

I've had to renew many different TLDs before and $12 is honestly not bad at all, most places give you a discount when you renew for longer than one year.

I think $12 is a pretty fair price honestly. I believe I paid $10 for mine but it wasn't really as popular as the one you have.

I'm with the majority. I've seen people pay way more than $12 for a domain renewal, so I think it's a fair price. Granted, I've seen lower renewal fees too. But, still 12$ is fair--in my opinion.
