I notice games like Dota 2 System Requirements say that it only needs 4GB of RAM, and other games like League of Legends only need 2GB of RAM for Windows XP, and 4GB is recommended for Vista,7 and 8.1.

I'm guessing, gamers need to close all programs like Web Browsers, Office Suites before they start playing PC games if they plan to play games like Dota 2 on a PC with only 4GB of RAM, Dual-Quad core CPU 2-4 GHz, and dedicated video card like the Nvidia GTX 650 2GB.

Plus, using a lightweight antivirus which uses less RAM, and CPU cycles like NOD32, Vipre antivirus, or temporary disabling your antivirus real-time virus blocker would help at freeing up RAM, and CPU cycles for playing more intensive games.

Re: Is 4GB RAM good enough for PC gaming?

But what are we talking about in terms of processing power and graphics card?

Online or offline gameplay?

I'd say RAM, is only one puzzle piece when it comes to playing and enjoying games.

4GB Ram is by no means enough for gaming, my pc configuration in layman terms is quad core 2.6 GHZ, 1 GB Graphics card, 4 GB ram and I can't run games like Ghost Recon future soldier and other heavy games developed after 2010.

8GB RAM + ! GB graphics or 6GB ram + 2 GB graphics to go with i5 or i7 is a good call as per current games.

4 Gigs is alright but I'd say 6 or 8. However the performance is heavily dependent on the CPU.

I agree 8GB of RAM, and a faster CPU, and graphics card is best for newer more intensive PC titles like Battlefield 4.

I read online that PC games like Counter Strike, Runescape, Minecraft, Need for Speed World, World of Warcraft, and most free to play games like Maple Story, Rose Online, Dota 2 and League of Legends can run on older PCs with only 4GB of RAM if the PC also has a decent CPU, and video card.

4GB is plenty for games made in 2010 or earlier. Newer games require 6GB, and if you want to future proof your system, get 8GB.

I myself have 6GB of RAM and I've never come close to having any problems with memory on any game I've played, like Skyrim, Saints Row 3, Crysis 3, etc.

If you had to choose, I'd say get 6GB of RAM and a better GPU. The GPU is the most important component for gaming. RAM is overrated in my opinion, as even the most memory intensive games only use a ma of 2GB of RAM, and the OS uses around 1GB max. As long as you don't have a ton of programs running, you can get by with 6GB for a few years easy.

I can run Minecraft, League, Oblivion, etc. on my 2GB Dell with little issues. Just make sure you have a quad core CPU and a minimum 512MB Video Card.

4GB is really the minimum requirement to (barely) run the game on its lowest settings. If you have a subpar graphics card, I'd recommend upgrading that first, then focusing on getting more RAM. Of course, keep in mind that you can't use more than 4GB of RAM unless you are running a 64 bit version of Windows.

Thanks for the tips.

I think if you run a Linux based operating system like Lubuntu, and play Linux games like Dota 2 which is available for download on 'Steam for Linux' which is compatible with Ubuntu, Lubuntu, and Linux Mint, 4GB of RAM could be enough since Lubuntu only uses 140MB of RAM after startup in my experience.

Didn't have much time to read all of the other replies, so if it's been said, I apologize:

Most people recommend 6GB to 8GB for modern-day PC gaming. This makes sure you are up-to-date with new games, and your system stays balanced. Keep in mind though, RAM isn't the only think you should consider when working on a PC gaming rig. 🙂

The more the RAM you use, the more graphical interface that you can enjoy. High resolution games often require high RAM requirements to play games smoothly with each and every details visible. I think for maximum gaming experience you can afford a 8GB RAM where you can experience both offline and online games with ease.

I don't think it would be enough in like 1-2 years. The application sizes are increasing day by day and apps are getting slower on low ram sizes.
I had 4Gigs of Ram and it was full like 30 minutes after I started working.
I would recommend going with 8 Gigs of ram or if you can wait for an year or so. I would encourage you to go with DDR4 modules or get cheaper 8 gigs DDR3 modules.

Thanks for the replies.

Would you need 8GB of computer RAM if someone installed a video card with 2-4GB of Video-RAM built-into the video card's circuit board like the Nvidia GTX 760-780 which comes with video ram sizes of 2,3,4, and higher GB RAM amounts?

Well, your computer RAM and your V-RAM perform two separate jobs, so both must be optimized in order to function at their best. In general, the VRAM generates the graphics you see and sometimes run some physics. Your RAM runs other processes provided by the game, such as the algorithms and minor physics. The Nvidia GTX 780 has 3GB of DDR5 RAM, so that's a great, great card. However, you can have the best card and still be lacking with your RAM.

It depends on your operating system also...
I run league of legends on a mac mini with 256mb in the gpu and 16gb as ram and I get 60fps.
On my macbook air I run it on a 1024mb on board gpu with 4 gig ram and a ssd and I get the same fps.
Make sure you uncap the fps in system settings on league of legends 😉

I notice a trend that most free to play games are usually playable even on older computers with just 2GB of RAM, but 4GB, Dual-Core CPU and a older Nvidia or AMD/ATI video card is recommended like League of Legends https://support.leagueoflegends.com/ent ... quirements

I think for a lot of free to play games like Need for Speed World, League of Legends, Maple Story, Rose Online, Runescape, Team Fortress 2, etc the requirements are pretty low.

My guest, the main audience for free to play games are kids, poor people, and frugal people who all may not own fast computers or laptops, but still want to play games like League of Legends.

Also RAM doesn't affect FPS much if you have enough to play the game. So having 16GB of RAM on a game that only needs a max of 2GB won't yield any better performance. I've only seen a few very memory-intensive games, like Battlefield 4 and Crysis 3, maybe Skyrim, and even those only need 4-6GB. Money is better spent on a new GPU or CPU. A lot of problems I've seen with memory are from people who have either too many applications running at once, or they have a junked up computer with tons of bloatware.

I read on a gaming forum that there is a rule that Game makers follow which is to make a PC game use less than 2GB of RAM.

Plus, more PC games like Need For Speed and Grand theft auto these days are console ports, and the Xbox 360, and PS3 which are the two most popular teen to mature game consoles only have 512MB of RAM, so porting a console game to PC may not make it use much RAM because console games do not use a lot of RAM, and the people porting the game may not want to spend as much time improving the graphics on PC because it takes more time, and money to make the graphics look nicer compared to using the same graphics from console games, and port it to PC.

People are also replacing their computers less often because of money problems, and PCs last longer because of higher quality PC parts, so there are still many people who own PCs with 3-4GB or less RAM, and game makers may want to make their game playable on slightly older computers, so there are more people playing the game on online multiplayer, and spending money on the game, and DLC.

I play very good games with 4GB of RAM, so it depends on your CPU.

Games are getting more memory hogging. To get 4 GB of memory you can't play these games anymore on 32 bit. Plus windows uses paging so that could slow the game down as well. Some games say 4 GB but don't used it.
