I've seen some big or popular sites with .net but is it difficult for people to remember? Of course, they might have to resort to using the .net in marketing (as in ads like "Visit JoesDiner.net").

Well, I have seen a TV ad (in the US) with someone advertising a .net but I haven't seen one for other extensions.

Do you have difficultly remembering ForumPromotion.net?

My advice is to use .net when your website can be described as a network. So, Celebrities Network would work for celebrities.net But CelebritiesShare.net doesn't really flow.

To be honest, that's what TLDs were meant to do. .net for networks, .org for organizations, .tv for television, and etc.

I think the extension has become more general in meaning. It seems to just represent website like Celebrities (website).net

I think that most of the extensions are marketable. It depends on the marketing team skills and the budget they have.

Usually after a .com, (in the US) people will choose .net but I'm not sure if that's tradition or smart marketing.

.net is really solid, as it is as trustworthy as .com in the eyes of ordinary people.

.net has more memory appeal for people than most extensions, but still less than a .com. For instance, if you say movie.net, then people would remember it more than movie.biz.

If I was to buy a domain I would personally only go with .com to be quite honest with you.

And as for marketing a domain it's all about what SEO you actually do for the domain to be fair, the more you put in to SEO the better results you will get for any tld.

I have used dot net domain for one of my website. And it definitely gets the preference for the content in the search. It's all depends on your effort. I never take extension seriously though. dot com or the dot net the content and the website loading matters.

It was originally for computer-related companies like web hosting (and it still is popular for hosting) or networking etc..

If you can't get the .com then .net would be more suitable. Unless you're a UK business for example, then .co.uk would be better.

if you have a good ranking in google than it is definitely marketable and people will remember your site.

Correct, besides TLDs you can also choose ccTLDs for the second choice if .COM was taken.
