Is Adsense enough for the forum earnings?

For employment niche, what I was in before, 100 or so a day would earn about $300 a month - and more visitors than that was something spectacular. But that did happen one time as a biz partner did some press release so I had something to brag on Facebook that day. 🙂

SEO is tougher, but that's a good thing. However, the problem is that it limits victory only to the paying.

That works with the employment niche and targeted traffic. That's because the primary motivation of visitors of such sites - is to look for work.

Yeah you probably did not give it enough time to develop in popularity. New websites are like most businesses that start from scratch they usually need at least two years before they catch on with the crowd (assuming you are offering a quality product and you've been promoting it properly)

Yes! But I do have 20-30 active members during that time. 🙂
