Would like to know if anyone is using either of these to promote there forum and basically how they are doing?

Im looking to enhance my fan page but with very little luck thus far! Any Advice is welcome 🙂

I never had any success promoting sites on Facebook, no matter what I tried.

I can't say about Twitter, I don't have one.

I wouldn't say these should be your source of 'advertising' rather keeping in touch with your customers and or fans.

Yea i have failed to see much response from FB or Twitter! I dont use it as my only source but i thought it would become a more reliable one.. Anyone doing anything specific to gain fans?

I find it as a good way to raise awareness of your content, I've gained a few likes or fans from posting links on facebook so it can work if you have content people enjoy.

yea each new review/work that i get i post to the fan page and get a slight influx of people yet none stick to forums! I know the conversion rate isnt high but would be nice to gain some members from FB/Twitter

Yeah, I know how that feels. I've seen some of my articles posted on other forums by visitors and seen people say they like them, yet nobody is interested in joining the forum and I can't for the life of me figure out why. How is one meant to get off the ground if nobody is willing to give them a go.

im thinking bribery haha!!

As bad as this may sound... its nice to see someone else have the same struggles as me! Shows its not just me having these problems!

I used TwitterFeed to connect my blog, and RSS feeds to Twitter to save time and I do get a few clicks via my Twitter. Twitter feed can also be used to track how many people are clicking your links posted via Twitterfeed.

I also follow people in my category, so I can be a good source for people to follow, and hopefully the people I follow might check out my websites.

You pose two issues with what you are doing. A Facebook page or Twitter page is just another website. You must then promote that website as well. A new FB or T page is not going to boost your traffic or membership. You've just got 2/3 new sites. So, it's merely a matter of promoting that page as well, on other sites and on social networks, but again, you've got a 3rd/4th new site to promote. It really depends on where you market your sites. If you have a bit of money to spend/waste, then you'd be better off in the short run then someone else with no money to spend.

I use Twitter to promote, and even if I don't see results after a day, over time, my Twitter referrals section in Google Analytics builds up and I can see that it has done something overtime.

I think the best way to promote is to engage in conversation. Get to know people, eg. forums, Twitter, Facebook, wikis etc., and people will click links when they know what type of person you are.

If you have like 200 twitter followers and say you post something new on your site or forum then you post that link on your twitter or your facebook page thats linked with your twitter then you will get more traffic. Depending on time of day also matters. This was how i managed to get 53 people on my forum at one time.

I get some good amount of temporary traffic from fb and twitter, but never found any active member with that.

I do have a Twitter page: http://www.twitter.com/chattingtime and while I'm not sure it's gotten me any members, it's gotten me loads of guests, so I guess that's better than not getting anything at all. Haven't had a whole lot of luck with Facebook. I have real life friends becoming fans of the page, but no one's joined the site yet. All one can do is keep trying!

I wouldn't trust the number of guests Twitter brings (if it shows on your online stats) simply because of the load of spambots that just follow links. Google Analytics is probably more accurate in that regard. For example, I would post links with 700+ followers and I would see a huge spike in guests, but the URL-shortening service (bit.ly) registered only 2 or 3 actual clicks.

However, Facebook and Twitter CAN be used as a great way to get members, though it takes some work (and it depends on the niche your forum covers).

As a personal anecdote, my new forum is based locally and we had a real-life event that people could attend. Given the actual forum is really small, I was expecting a small turnout, around 20ish people. However, with the power of Facebook friends (the friends part is the important one), we managed to get over 50 people (almost past the capacity of the venue) and now our traffic has spiked.

So yes, it can work. You just gotta know what to do to use FB and Twitter to your advantage.

How sure are you that those 53 people were actually people? I'm willing to bet my 2c that they were all Twitter bots, which is more probable than 53 people.

Facebook and Twitter are great for unique hits. Depends on what your website is about though. If its a "forum promoting" website nobody on Facebook gives a shit about that kind of stuff.

If its a funny/humerous website then your looking at more hits from people. The average person on FAcebook is just that, an average person. It all depends on what your marketing, who your marketing it too, and when.

+1 to the last poster. Funny groups, or groups that people can relate to go well. While genuine groups with actual content normally don't do as well.

One of my admins started up a Facebook group, however it was soon forgotten and didn't generate any revenue for the site. It now lurks far far far down on it's members walls, and won't be brought up unless we tag it in our posts. And let's face it, no one wants to spam their friends with forums left right and center.

If you have Xfire, that can be an awesome tool to promote your site with, as it is easy to join groups and gain IM access to hundreds of people within seconds. http://www.xfire.com
