Is banning ever necessary?

It sure is a lot of work for administrators and moderators while discussing the case to finally ban someone, but that shouldn't stop anyone from giving someone a ban if necessary. After all it is a basic way to stop a troublemaker member from creating more problems and still effective, even though we should also consider other methods.

As with most users here I agree with alternatives to using the Ban Hammer. I would only ever use Bans for users who spam, try to fraud others or share excessively gory or inappropriate content, all things I am non tolerant to. Moderation queue, or privilege removals are the way I tend to deal with problematic users who misuse specific aspects of the forum.

If a person gets too spammy or rude for a forum then it is better to ban him and not have them on the forum than to have to waste time going through each and every post he posts and accept/decline them.

Yes, the user has to want to come back and be a member for realising there mistake not set on spamming/posting rule violating content.

It all depends on the type of activity you want. If you want activity just for the post count, don't ban. If you want quality people, cut out those who are only there to cause issues.

I agree and I think mod queu is a great way to deal with members with an attitude problem. I think the ban hammer should be reserved for spammers and scammers. 🙂

Banning should be used for those who simply cannot stop breaking the law..Illegal activities, etc, deserve a ban. That and well, I ban spammers in which post only a few posts with the same message and no intent of actually participating.

However the rest depends on how many warnings they have, usually I just temporarily suspend the account to get it clear that what they did isn't acceptable. However I use the warning system and revoking privileges religiously.

I think bans all depend on the circumstances.

Banning is sometimes necessary to avoid spoiling a whole community. If one individual is ruining it for the rest, why should they be allowed to continue to be a part of that forum? Surely it is better to keep the trouble makers out, and let in those who genuinely want to participate?
