Is Facebook killing forums?

I think forums are the real interaction place for people who like same kind of stuff you can discus ,chat , can get honest reviews only on forum even though you don't know people on forums personally.
Do you think it is possible to get such kind to interaction on FB you can never get such interaction even though you join a group liked by thousands of people youll never find what you are looking on FB.

Of course it is. Facebook has already killed most social networks and I think people need to stop pretending that anything can stop it and make new better ones. I think there is still a little life in forums but everyone uses Facebook. Just like Bing and Google. Everyone uses Google because they always have and Facebook offers so much with little work (you hardly ever load a page, all done with jQuery and AJAX etc etc) to do. So yes, it is.

Facebook can't do everything, especially what my forum has to offer, so there is no comparison. Facebook is strictly for family on my end. You can't role-play on it effectively either.

If you're not going to use Facebook Integration (ie. Facebook Connect, Facebook Like Buttons, and Facebook Pages) on your forums, they certainly can kill you. Otherwise, you can certainly use something as large as Facebook to your advantage.
Besides, one-click login is pretty damn convenient. One question I certainly have to ask is why is Vanilla the only free forum software who actually recognizes this?

I find Forums to be better for people who want to talk anonymously since I can use a username, fake info, etc instead of my real name, and I also do not have to worry about Facebook letting apps access my personal information.
Plus, most good forum software these days make it possible or have mods for members to disable other members and guests from viewing their gender, location, and other info in their profile.
I just use Facebook for playing flash games, and reading news, but I mainly use forums for chatiing about stuff since I feel more comfortable using my user name rather then my real name to post topics and replys online.
But, I agree that Facebook might be making some people not go on forums as often.

Facebook took all the people who wanted to be close to people they know.
Twitter took all the people who wanted to discuss the issues with people they don't know.
Online gaming took all the gamers off of forums as now they can communicate while they play.
Each on their own didn't kill forums but all three combined chipped away at it.
Then you have Youtube which is another social network which is also chipping away at forums because it allows for interaction between people on a more personal level then forums do.
Forums might not totally die out but I don't see forums returning to the way they used to be as they slowly become obsolete as amount of free time drops and options open up to what someone can do with their free time.
There is so much for a person to do on the net that you have to compete with so much that you didn't have to compete with 3-5 years ago.

They are two different tools, with some similarites and many differences.
The biggest advantage of forums over facebook is the ability to carry on threaded conversations about a given subject. Messages on forums can be far more robust than on fb. It's far easier to change font, text, quote others, embed images, vids, emoticons, etc. on a forum post than it is on a fb post.
Others have already pointed out the distinction of fb being for friends and family, while forums are more anonymous. They are typically subject-centric rather than 'you-centric'. That is, fb is all about you, your life, who you like to talk to, and what you're into. you you you.
Whereas forums are more about community, discussing and learning things about a specific subject, with others who share interest or expertise in that subject, whether you know them or not.
There will ALWAYS be a substantial role for forums.

FB takes some of that (takes a lot from some people), leaving less or no time for forums. But it's not because fb is replacing the need or value or the functionality of forums in any way- it's just eating up online time.

Since I had a realization that Facebook is mostly people who won't make good members anyway. Forums will always be on top, who cares what Facebook is doing? Focus on driving their users to your communtiy, get involved on fb pages, and groups = win for you, same with Twitter. If a forum is dying, its not our fault, and facebook shouldn't be blamed.
Ridiculous, truthfully, because a forum is apart of social networking, and as long as we have the web, forums, and the other social networking sites can survive just fine.
So, why talk about facebook killing forums, when its not?
So yes, you're right. But certainly it's not good to advertise on FB and Twitter because, besides what I already mentioned, I tried that and failed miserably.

It could just be that Facebook isn't a suitable advertising platform for a roleplaying forum centered around war. I'm not saying that your forum is bad; I'm just saying that Facebook may not be where your prospective members gather. 😉Nuke said:

Ah, I see. Honestly, I haven't had any success from Facebook, either. Maybe there just isn't an abundance of good members waiting to join your forum there.

I also failed at recruiting members from Facebook. I think if you have Facebook Connect on your forum which is a feature which lets anyone sign in as long as they have a FB account to your forum to post. You might get a few extra post from Facebook member, but Facebook connect can also lead to unwanted spam and troll post since so many people are on Facebook, and there are generally more trolls and spammers on Facebook in my experience.

As some of you know our friends 2 year old little boy has cancer and we are trying to raise funds for him, we've set up a Facebook group, we have 1277 members, for our first event 156 people said they were attending, 4 people from Facebook came!......don't ever rely on Facebook for ANYTHING! It's for lazy people to sit there clicking
