Is it worthwhile promoting in a different forum niche?

One of the big advantages of promoting your forum link (via signature line/ad, etc) on a related forum is how the audience of that forum are already interested in the subject and most likely to click through on your link to see what you have to offer.

But, there are some disadvantages to promoting on a related niche forum. For one, some forums don't allow competitors to advertise links to similar sites, even via signature line. That limits your advertising options.

For another, you could easily promote via an unrelated niche forum so long as your responses were relevant for the forum being posted in. There's a good chance that others would like what you have to say or just want to hang out with you more and check out your forum signature link anyway.

Always beneficial. First and foremost, a link is a link. Second, too much inbreeding is not healthy. There has to be some diversity, or you'll be running out of things to say. Having other passions in life besides cuddling up in a particularly narrow niche reflects favorably on a well-rounded intellect.

Like the above said, a link is a link. It can't do any harm in having it in other areas.

My personal opinion is when it comes to promoting a link on a particular niche, I would like to find a raving fan of that niche on a forum.

Not just someone who just likes the niche, because you will have a higher chance of them visiting what you're linking to, if it's also an offer you have a very high chance of them buying also.

To find raving fans is very easy, they are the person who drops big names in any niche that only other raving fans would know about, and talks passionately about what they have to share. once you've found 1 of the 2 or both then you've got a pretty high chance of success.

I completely agree with promoting in non-related niche. I actually prefer affiliating with non-related forums/sites. I think non-related forums find it less competitive at least that's how I see it.
