MS Office 2013 which comes with MS word seems kind of expensive at $139.00 for the Home and Student version which comes with Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and OneNote.
But, I mainly just use Word Proccessors to type and print out letters to send to people by mail, and make flyers for a garage sale, promotion, etc. $139.00 seems like too high a price to pay for my simple needs when there are free alternative like Open Office, LibreOffice, Kingsoft Office 2012, and SSuite which are free, and has similar features to MS Office 2013.
Re: Is MS Word worth it if I just use it to print out letter
I read stories of MS Office and Windows getting infected by Macro-viruses and malware embedded in MS Office files like .doc, .xls, .ppt, and other Office file formats.
Are the free Office suites safer from Macro-Viruses and malware made for MS Office?
Re: Is MS Word worth it if I just use it to print out letter
I only used Microsoft's suites for college purposes. I immediately replaced it with iWork afterwards. People can always try the free alternatives if your university or work doesn't require or supply a license for it. MS Office is never cheap and the subscription offer might put an impact on you in the long run.
Sometimes universities will have these requirements and you just have to use MS Office and not take chances of getting the wrong margin, sizes, etc. that might be restricted to MS Office. It might be an act of paranoia but it's always better than the chances of flunking due to the lack of knowledge in this respect.
If it's just for casual usage such as printing out letters, go ahead and try free alternatives. I'm sure they can get the job done without being too different.
