I know a lot of people prefer MyBB over other forum software solutions (or at least, I do), but do you think that MyBB is overused or overrated, and if so, why? Also, what would you think would be a good, free alternative to MyBB?

There are not many other good free alternatives, other than phpBB, in which I still doubt sometimes. 😛

I think MyBB is used a lot because people don't have a ton of money to go out and buy premium forum software's. Costing you $140 plus themes and plugins, which are not always free, can really take a toll on a forum and you don't even know if it's going to work out.

People also go for MyBB because it has the most nice themes, and I think it's more supported than phpBB is.

Though I agree, it kind of is overused, but I think all the forums that disappears as soon as they're made balances it out.

How can a forum software be overused? My question isn't directed toward just MyBB as a software either.

I disapprove.

Too much of a market share in the forum market.

Well, it can't possibly be "over-used." When creating a forum, you want a software that is popular because it works. No point trying to be different when it comes to software. 😉

Right, I just wanted to know what you guys think. I think MyBB is great despite past security issues, but I think a lot of places do use it.

As far as free forum software goes I don't think you can top myBB. I know SMF used to be a pretty good alternative. I've never cared for phpBB at all. It's pretty far behind even the other free alternatives.

I know most people can't afford the paid versions but if you could spare $140 then xenForo is the way to go (IMO) and wBB is a pretty decent alternative in the paid market. vBulletin is garbage now and has been since Mike and Kier left (the developers of xF now) and IP.Board is decent but it's pretty server intensive.

Back on topic though I don't think a forum software product can really be over used because there aren't many options out there not truthfully. So it's always pretty much gonna be myBB, SMF, or phpBB for the free guys. I have used most of if not all of the free software and it still doesn't come close to what the paid guys offer. Not saying you have to go paid but if you can you should. So if I didn't have an xF license I would probably be using myBB myself as IMO it's the best of the free guys.

MyBB is definitely used a lot but I see why with all the benefits it offers for a free software. I agree that the downside is support as it's pretty bad normally- one plus of going the paid route. For me, as a free software MyBB was pretty much an instant winner. Mainly phpBB's backend is harder to navigate and manage, SMF is not something I like aesthetic + function wise, and Vanilla's overly simple for my needs.

I will probably go to a paid software in the future.
