Self-hosting can seem appealing to tech-savvy individuals, but is it practical in today’s fast-paced digital landscape? What are the real risks and rewards of managing your own server?

The best thing about having control over your own server is that your community or website will never be censored or taken down. You have full control over everything. Though if you're inexperienced you may run into hiccups at times and might accidentally cause something to break. But there's always other people who are more knowledgeable that can help you if you ever run into hiccups! In this day and age of the internet, it's absolutely worth the hassle and I hope more people will realize this and try their hand at making their own websites and communities again like they did back in the earlier days of the internet.

Is this really a conversation topic or just market research for your hosting company? 😛

Anyway, you want to self-host any project you're working on because you are in control of everything, can backup everything.... and if your server or chosen hosting company goes down you can just restore your backup in a new server location and point your domains to the new server. You are pretty much unstoppable.

Even though I am "tech-savvy" to some extent, the idea of self-hosting would be too much hassle for me and I wouldn't know how to begin with it...

We have clients with specific questions in particular areas, and one of our challenges is that we lack a defined demographic for fans of these topics. However, exploring these subjects helps us gain a better understanding of the industry we operate in. Therefore, the answer to your question is both yes and no.

Honestly, I think it depends on your goals and your experience. I started with free-forums, proboards and Forumotion. They were nice as a tool to get me used to blogging and administrating a community. It is like renting versus owning a house. When you rent it is not from your pocket and up to you to solve issues but when you own the place you are the one responsible for all the replacements and payments and keeping this working well.

The thing with not having your own hosted community is that you cannot back it up. You will have limitations on the activity on the advertising it might get and how many changes you are able to do. Different providers will give you different things. However it gave me an idea of the feel of different forum software and after a few years I jumped into self-hosting.

Now, I didn't have to start big. I started with a pay in posts deal, where I had to post on the host provider community a certain amount of posts per month to keep the service. I was fortunate where the benefits where splendid for my tiny community. It was a bit overwhelming and I cannot imagine just how confusing it'd be if I had jumped with no experience, ultimately it was a rewarding experience to have that project and then upgrade the plan to paid one, buy my own domain and have it be what I wanted it to be. my only regret is that because I didn't test the backups I didn't realize they were buggy and I ended up being unable to retrieve the posts when I tried to bring the community back a few years down the line.
