SEO can be free but I find doing it yourself can only take you so far before you need guidance or a professional person/business. Depending on what kind of ads and how long you run ads I think that Adwords and SEO costs eventually balance out. Both seem to work well but combined is the best. Costly investment though.

I spend around $20 a month on SEO for RMMV.co and I'm ranked 1 in several keywords, first page on a lot more. I get over 300k traffic a month from it, so I personally think SEO is a lot cheaper, and more efficient than adwords.
