I saw this article on CNN today, and it got me thinking: Is texting really an awful addiction like some of these wackjob parents and idiot media personalities say it is?

If you read through the article, it talks about how people age 12-17 text at least 50 text messages a day, and that the majority of it comes from girls, because they use their phone for social reasons to talk to one another more often than guys.. which is true, I never text my guy friends to say "Hey, how are you doing" or anything like that.. and that seemed to be the only legitimate point in the article. (I am also talking about the accompanying video to the article about texting addiction, not just the article about teens texting)
I probably send out at least 50 texts a day, and I don't see the problem with it. To be quite honest, I don't see how it can be a problem. You're socially communicating with others, which is healthy, it's not a drug that's going to make you die, and it just doesn't make sense why people think it's an awful addiction. It's not like one of those addicting video game where you sit alone in a bedroom playing fighting virtual monsters and talking to strange 45 year old men over the internet.

I send out about 50-100 a day. Depends on my mood. Like 90% of my texts are to girls. xD
I dont' see it as an addiction for myself. It keeps me sane.

Thats all I ever do is text with my cell.

I send out maybe 10+ texts a day, if I feel like responding at all. After that, I'm usually just to busy doing other things then having to grip my phone all day.

To be honest, I couldn't care less how many text messages anyone sends out as long as they get what they are supposed to do done. People like this fail to convince me that it really matters, especially if you have an unlimited plan. I don't see how texting is any worse than any other pass-time, and with moderation, that isn't a problem either. I guess texting can be dangerous when driving and so forth, but again, one can still text without endangering their lives.

And I don't send out more than 3 text messages in any given day.

Yes I think it is because once I text someone then they reply and then I reply so this replying becomes 100's of text every day LOL

But regardless, you can stop if you want. You put the phone down.

Yes I the also reason why I stop is because I do not have any credit left! LOL

personally if a converstaion goes over 2 texts for me i'll phone, too much texting annoys me and a phone call you get it said quicker and easier.

Yeah I agree too much texting is a pain ........... now if you could Voice Text that would be cool.

I believe those are called Phone Calls or Voice mails. 😛

We can all agree that texting is an addiction. When I had a cell, I texted a lot. Even now, without my phone, there is a text addict in the house: my mom. She sends..I have to say around 50 texts a day. Especially now that she's using Match.com.

Point is, texting is just like a drug.

Labeling everything an addiction these days is just a crutch because then that's taking personal responsibility out of the equation. As long as sending 50-100+ texts a day doesn't interfere with your job or relationships I don't see a problem with it.

I believe so.. I personally dont text that much but I have friends who do. Ive actually had people ignore my calls and then text me after I called them saying "Text it.. What did you want?"

WTF?

Its funny going out to eat with these people. They will set their phone on the table next to their food and constantly staring down at it every few seconds just waiting for their phone to light up.

No  I mean you just talk into your phone and it sends what you say via a text without having to tap it all out.

Unfortunately I believe texting is a serious addiction to most people. Even for myself.

It is for some people an addiction IMO but not for me as I never feel the need to text. 😛

I am F'ing pissed at the media. They blow up everything bigger than it should be and make little things seems 100% worse. TEXTING IS NOT AN ADDICTION. We just do it. Is going online an addicition? If it is then we can pull this back on the parents because it isn't. They just hate the fact we can say stuff they can't see.

I text sometimes but not a lot. But my sister text a lot. She is very addicted to it. So I think texting could be very addicted.
