OAL CITY, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — Several Bibles and crosses survived a fire at a church in Raleigh County.

The Coal City Fire Department said a fire broke out just before 1 a.m. Sunday at Freedom Ministries Church in Grandview.

The fire department said at times, the fire was so hot firefighters had to back out of the building.

Despite the intensity of the fire, the fire department said no Bibles were burned and none of the crosses were damaged.

The fire department said no firefighters were injured while fighting the fire.

No disrespect to anyone, but I find it tough to believe. I mean, I can believe God exists - and maybe has left around 100 percent free-will to people (explaining evil). However, though, the idea that God intervenes like - say a "guardian angel" is tough to believe. Anyway, some try to work around this problem - by saying God cares for those in the covenant (praying, following). That could be true - but the horror happening to those outside of it (Nagasaki, serial killer victims, natural disaster victims, burn victims) is just too terrible to justify - even using that idea.

Bibles not burning is not necessarily a sign from God. I'm not saying it isn't either. My husband's aunt had a horrific fire that destroyed the home but the top story had a bedroom where his niece stayed. Her toys were in pristine condition (probably smelly though) so I know that not everything burns in a fire.

God allows bad things to happen to people and He isn't always the cause of the bad things as some preachers will insist (they sinned so God got them!).

I do believe God can intervene because of some past experiences. Why some and not others? He doesn't tell us.

The Bible says that the ancient Hebrews, a covenant people, were punished when they disobeyed - specifically, other groups, what happened to them was due to randomness or because of interactions with the Jews.

Yes, in the Old Testament God was setting His people aside so that the Savior could come from that lineage and He wanted them to be holy. We now have the Savior who died for our sins.

A dark side of me tells me if Christians had to "truly" encounter horror - they'd doubt God.

The problem with what you wrote is that you assume Christians are living perfectly wonderful lives with nothing bad happening to them. Doubting God is not the equivalent of rejecting Him.

Christianity is not about religion but about a personal relationship with Christ and if you have that you will not doubt
