When I try to buy MP3's off of Amazon for songs I like, I get a message that I can not buy the MP3s because I'm not living in the US.

Is Amazon.com downloadable content store only available for Americans?

Quoted from the Amazon MP3 Terms of Use:

As required by our Digital Content providers, Digital Content will, unless otherwise designated, be available only to customers located in the United States.

Same for sales from Amazon.co.uk - they are only available to citizens of the United Kingdom.

I think it has something to do with the copyright laws since Canada does not consider file sharing illegal since the Canadian police don't have the resources and time to catch everyone who downloads music.

Amazon sells MP3s which are DRM free, so anyone can easily share them, but in the US and UK copyright laws are very harsh, and people can get fined thousands or millions for sharing music on Bittorrent.

According to Wikipedia it has to do with the licensing agreements that Amazon makes with the recording companies.

America Record Industry is known for actively suing people for downloading and sharing a few MP3s. Today, a bunch of bittorent sites which don't even host any trackers or .torrent files got shut down by the US because the websites were search engines which help people look for .torrent links.

Example: Woman Hit With $1.92 Million Fine in RIAA Case : http://torrentfreak.com/woman-hit-with- ... se-090619/

U.S. Government Seizes and Shutters Torrent-Finder.com

The agencies named in the notice include the Department of Justice, the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center, and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement arm of Homeland Security Investigations.

While torrenting in general is one of the seedier parts of the underbelly of the Internet, Torrent-Finder itself did not host or link to any torrents. Instead, it simply acted as a sort of torrent search engine, returning iframes with other sites that do contain torrent links.

This stinks for people who use these torrent search engine to look for legal material like Linux ISO files, free software, and public domain non-copyrighted music and movies.

If the US want to they might go as far as going after actual generic search engines like ask.com since they can also be used to search for torrent and pirated materials via links being hosted on other sites, but displayed on search engines results.

There is not much most website owner can do to get their domain name back since fighting with "Homeland Security" to get back a domain name can be very tough.

Well yeah but then there are people like me who don't give a shat. Their corruption only leads me further away from buying their trash, fools don't realize it while they're drowning in cash.

It's just too bad that corporations control our country's government and laws and probably always will.
