Is there any hope for a new social network?

Facebook has dominated the social network niche for years now and has been the major player of the fall of Myspace and Bebo. So if pre-established major social networks are loosing their user base then what hope is there for a new social network? No one wants to join an empty social networks so how do you get it started? I was recently a director of marketing at a new social network called Statuz and I was surprised to find it actually did well and looks like it could be a big hit in the future but do you think there is a chance that another major social network could come along even when the likes of Google couldn't do it?

Instagram, Keek, Viddy, Pheed, and Pinterest are all pretty new social networks, and are doing pretty well with their niche.

But, I think general social networks are harder to get popular since they are not very unique, and there is already Facebook, Google+, and Myspace for general social networks.

I think a niche social network related to saving money, food, and online learning might do better since there is less competition.

Of course there is. I'm sure the same thing was thought when MySpace ran the niche, yet it didn't stop Mr Zuckerburg from making Facebook. The only problem is people think exactly like this and it stops them from making a new site, which could potentially be the next Facebook.

This is true. Unless we destroy ourselves with nuclear war, Facebook has to encounter competition sometime!

I personally have always wanted to start my own social network website, but i'm still learning PHP.

I'm programming a social network next year as a school project, if it's good enough the school will fund it.

I think the problem with Facebook is you don't know how much they know about you, seriously they probably know more than you think.

I would in this project make a page where we just dump everything to the user that we know about them, every single thing, age, email, name, IP and whatever else, because then I feel as though people will feel more secure.

Hopefully next year goes well and here project gets completed and people like it!

Google+ is successful. I don't know why so many people think it failed.

It may work to create a complete new social network now, but you will need to have a lot of social influence on other people before doing so. The people will have a reason to join the social network, if that is the way to contact you. It is a pyramide system and I do not think any social network will last forever.

It's possible. You just have to make sure you build up critical mass and encourage people to stop using other social networks (which would then force their friends to join yours). I actually have a pretty good idea of how I'd build a social network up.... A billion $$ idea though, don't know whether I want to share 😉

If you have knowledge in Web Development languages then i would say put that idea to the test. Also you could be the manager of your team and hire other people to do the actual coding part because you will still be the "CEO" and make the money. I have had a few ideas in the past also and i may put them to the test one day.

Yeah it would take a lot of dedication, Also as i stated before you don't have to be the head coder, You can hire web developers to work for you.

probably not for a while, a new social media site might pop up and have nice features but once immature kids start to join it will die out.

I think facebook is actually starting to die out in my opinion, especially after they went public and their stocks failed big time

Facebook is not the number one social network in Brazil, Russia, or China. They all use local social networks.

There's a new ad-free social network called app.net and despite it being a paid subscription service, they have a pretty big user base with a bunch of nice, mature folks. A couple of people from twitter are slowly switching to that new social network.

I think there's a new hope for a 'new' social network so long as there's a group of people that matches your niche. In this case, app.net boasts in having an ad-free social network with a strong focus on developers and because it's paid you can expect that whoever is investing a monthly/yearly payment on that site is bound to be mature.

https://medium.com/ is a content/blog social network which has more long post, and is less about making short status updates like Facebook and Twitter.

Medium is founded by the creators of Twitter and Blogger/Blogspot.
