Hi guys so I bought a new forum yesterday - http://talkfootball.org and I was wondering if I made the right decision with the name? I mean I tried to get the .com or .co.uk version but they were taken. So instead I went for .org

Do you think this was a good choice? I know its a bit late to be asking but at least I will learn for any future purchases! 😀

.org isn't bad, pretty close to .net and it's a securer TLD than most. It's well known, the only thing that is lower is it's value if you plan to sell the domain, but it's pretty much the same for usage.

In my opinion, assuming that ."org" or ".net" don't happen to be relevant or you don't want to create something like "del.icio.us":

.com > .net > .org

They all are fine, but I think that .com and .net are better (for your purposes. If you were making a charity for example, .org would be better than .com in that case). So, .org is fine, unless you can get your mits on an equably relevant .com or .net.

I have alway's prefered .org for some reason plus makes a change to .com & .net forum's imo.

There is nothing wrong with a .org, depending on the site. If you are a world trusted and know organisation, then a .org would be handy since people see that you are not there to make money or advertise, rather help the world.

If its for a forum, then you will have to be careful. There are some who get turned off by a .org. But, if you look for a domain and that domain's .com is taken, then you'd be not really smart if you buy the .org. You basically give yourself more work there.

I generally associate .org sites with non profits or charities... I'd only ever use a .net or a .com.

Same here, really. .com or .net would be more suitable for a forum than .org. Unless of course you were making a forum that went along with a particular charity or something. I don't know.

.org is rather an organization. I use it on my forum because we are free 🙂

Don't quote me here but I've heard that .org and .edu get you higher marks from google than .com does. But .com's the most common, so the most familiar.

edu = education. So that domain is probably good for a school related site or something. But I can see why those would be ranked the highest, though.

But .com is also the most used and is harder to find the right domain name.

Good point, that. I've always fancied .net domains for forums. But there too, you have to find a domain that will sound good with your site's name, which makes it real hard.

I usually see .org as being for something for a Government or charity (or some other 'organisation'). There's nothing really wrong with them, though for a forum (which isn't an organisation) it probably isn't appropriate.

Forum can be classified as an organization. I actually think org would be almost as good for com for a social network and stuff.

The .org was originally, and still is common for non profitable organisations. So if you see yourself aiming to make money then it doesn't add up, in theory. But then again, a TLD is better (most of the time) than a subdomain or free domain.

Heh--I should've probably gone with an Org. We're not out to make a penny, we're a hobby game site. Oh well 🙂

DMOZ is on a dot org and it does quite well. My preference would always be for a .com, but sometimes you can't get what you want - you have to take what you can get and make the best of it.

If you do go with the .org domain I'd suggest that the logo you design for the site, should really emphasise the .org part of the site name. If people visit your site once, you want them to remember that it's a .org, otherwise they may type in .com next time they decide to visit you.

My research says .org is better than .com for ranking well in google.
You have made a good choice
