Is your host good with backups? Have they ever lost your backup?

I've never had an issue with KnownHost in really any respect. Anytime I've needed to make use of a backup, they've been on it in a flash. No issues for me!

My host offers weekly backup 🙂 it's not big in size around 10GB that they allow. Once a week 🙂 I can also do my own backups if I wanted too

We use HawkHost and at the moment, my other half @Smokey tends to know more about the hosting and whether they take backups regularly. I believe they do.

We also take backups ourselves if we are adding something new or even upgrading something so that if anything goes wrong, we can go back to the backup.

I've heard good things about HawkHost, I'm sure they do routine backups as most hosts do. 🙂

We have been very happy with HawkHost ourselves 🙂 never had any issues and they always keep us up to date when it comes to any outages or issues, can not fault them at all 🙂

What is their policy if you need to change your hosting configuration mid-contract? For example, if you start out in a shared server configuration and need to move to a dedicated or VPS environment during your contract term, is that allowed? Are there penalties?

You're free to change plans, but you will be charged the difference of the more expensive plan, pro-rated for the remaining time of the month, it even states on the order form:

If the new package you select costs more, you'll be invoiced for the prorated difference.

So it's pretty easy to transfer with minimal costs.

I've had no issues with generating back ups for my site. I keep updated back ups, so I don't have to rely on my host.

Yes, my host takes daily backups, along with weekly backups. It also takes backups and stores daily/weekly backups on an off site server that I can access when needed.

My host is good about backups, they create daily backups. I also make my own backups just in case something happens, it's best to have multiple options and honestly I feel like it's better to back it up yourself to ensure everything goes smoothly.

I've lost count of the number of times I've seen hosting companies let customers down when it comes to keeping backups. I can also guarantee that virtually nobody ever checks to see if the backups they have taken actually work.

I'd urge every forum owner to create an off-site backup of their database and files on a regular basis and use them to periodically create a test site.

I keep a backup of my sites code, and download regular SQL backups. I've lost backups before and to be honest I'd rather have my backups saved/downloaded rather than keep it with the host.

We backup all of our clients' cpanel accounts as courtesy, and configured the server to retain the last 5 backups. Never had any issues, and our clients are appreciative of that. We only get a few requests every here and there to restore a previous backup from the ones we generated.

As a provider, we conduct daily backups of our database and weekly backups of all data, retaining them for one month. However, we always recommend that our users and other providers ensure they create regular backups of any essential data themselves.

My servers are all self-managed VPS/Dedi servers so it's basically up to me. Some do have automated backups, but most of my servers are on me to setup, so it depends. A lot of my projects are in Git and I'm using Docker more, so a lot of times the backups only need to be incremental backups for user uploads, or the database, whereas the core files are managed off-server in git, or similar.
