Does your off topic or general discussion section (if you have one) get more activity than your other boards? If so, how do you work on making other sections more active?
Our off topic area is quite popular especially our off topic roleplay. Recently I've begun marketing it a bit more to take advantage of that and see if it brings in more members.

Marketing your off topic section? Hm, that's interesting. For me, I find that having a bigger off-topic section detracts from the general quality of the rest of the board. What have you found from promoting the off-topic section?
My off topic sections have about 8 times more posts than the off topic sections. But when I first started my forum it was about 50 times more active, because the people I invited to get it started weren't interested in Mario.
I don't try to get people to post on topic, the most important thing is for everyone to have a good time therefore I don't care which section people post in. 🙂
postwhoring.isgreat is an off topic forum to begin with, but there are themed subforums, such as Food, Current Events and Entertainment. The subforum designated for "everything else" is definitely the most popular. I agree with the poster who said that seems to be the case on most message boards. People seem to love the off topic chatter! 😀
Mine is, but mainly because most of the members on my forum don't know of my forum's niche. So they direct their attention towards topics they know about.
I suppose you just have to make more topics in the boards you want to have more attention.
I have a Manga drawing related forum where off topic section is hyper active. I think one reason is members feel home at forum and they talk about even day to day stuff there. I had to have a specific chit chat topic so they don't get carried away in other useful topics.
