I've made the leap to web design....

Nope. I'll probably look to get it coded soon, just so I can see it coded. 🙂

Thanks!

Question.. how is it a web template when it isn't even coded 😛?

It looks does look good though.

Well, it's a template. A base from which to build - an image to be sliced and coded. >_>

I never said 'template', I said 'design'. 😉

Sorry, but it's not good enough for me.

It just hasn't got a decent feel to it. It's too simple. The colours aren't all that fab either. The yellow stars clash with the grey background and the outer black glow makes it look ugly.

The logo should be more than plain old text. Use a gradient on it, maybe an outer glow.

The statistics at the bottom are not aligned correctly either. A good 130 pixels to the left should do it.

Another thing is that the photos aren't blending in well. They at least need a border to look a bit better instead of just sitting there with no effects whatsoever.

Before any moderators or users takes this the wrong way I am simply giving constructive criticism.

Just stopped by to see how the site is and it's nice to see you taking up web design Ben, the design you've made is quite nice and even though the lack of colour can be off-putting on certain designs, I think it works well so good job 🙂

@McStormify You may think you are giving constructive criticism but your post sounds as if you are a professional at web design, and you're not. I agree that the logo is plain, that should be change to possibly contain an image or a simply better typography.

A gradient or an outer glow would make it worse. Usually the more simple the design, the better. The statistics at the bottom (if you write the CSS correctly) won't be a problem as a margin set to 0 would make sure of that.

Lastly the pictures could do with a white background, about 4px of white around would emphasise it more (like that adverts next to the quick reply here). Finally: you don't have to use effects here and there and everywhere. CSS3 is none-existent in IE > 8 so any CSS3 (text-shadow, box-shadow, border-radius etc) is pointless. Sometimes too much effects just looks awful.

Keep up the good work Ben :great:

Dan, before you tell others off for acting like a 'Professional Web Designer', perhaps consider yourself first? That's pretty much a beautiful troll, as is this but seriously? Just because you're not a professional web designer such as Eduardo Santos or Daniel Sandvink, doesn't deprive you of your view on art or web design.

For example, traditional art critique columnists in newspapers, magazines etc aren't professional traditional artists, but if you're going to slag off an entire industry, be my guest. +1

If you're going to troll hard, troll well? 😛

Oh and Stormify, I think that was some sweet critique, and Dan I think your critique was good if slightly off centre, Ben posted a design, for design purposes, so we're here to judge it on it's merits in design, not coding creditability.

It is not bad Ben, but could use some work. The first thing that sticks out like a sore thumb to me is the background....thing...behind where it says "Think you've got the best photos?" The footer could use some work as well. I see in the comments on that page that you are working on the footer. I look forward to seeing v2 of this design. 🙂

Thanks very much for the support. I couldn't have said it better myself.

You must not code designs frequently. Because when I see a design I always think about how it could be coded and actually critique it based off that, whether you like it or not it's just how my brain works. And looking at a design from a coding perspective is a good idea, because there is a pretty good chance that the design will actually be coded one day.

I don't think Dan was trolling as I don't think you were trolling, I simply think that nobody here is a professional designer so no one should be acting like one.

As for what McStormify said, he said some pretty pompous things which inclines me to think that he is a bit of a pompous person, I have never gotten to know him so I have no idea but that is just what I am understanding from his words.

And back on topic, for the design. I like it, for the most part it is good, I agree with what's been said about the logo, Ben you should consider exploring some more options with it, I'm not saying it's bad but you should look to some more fonts and effects if possible.

For the nature images, like what has been said, something on the outside to emphasize the images is important, that is clearly the focus of the page so shouldn't it be emphasized?

Other than that I think the rest looks basic which is good sometimes.
