Amid allegations of a child sexual abuse cover-up by the Penn St. administration, Head Football Coach Joe Paterno has been fired, along with President Graham Spanier. Both effective immediately. Paterno is the winningest coach in FBS history and has been the head coach there for 45 years.

That's tragic. I'm going to miss him. I figured he would just retire at the end of the season, but it looks like the Board of Trustees were so worried about the university reputation and all that they made actions immediately and fired Joe Paterno. Honestly, I don't really feel Joe Paterno was truly in the wrong. I know he should have went to the police, but I think what he did would be fine as long as he would have informed his superiors with a sense of urgency, so then they can inform the police.

At the end of the day he deserved it. He would have gone to the police if he hadn't been worried about loosing his best assistant coach and damaging his football program. Did he do what was legally required? It's possible. Still, I don't believe he did what was morally correct after what he saw.

I live about 20 minutes away from the main campus and this is the only thing on the T.V.
I read on cnn that Joe P hired a criminal lawyer today.

Joe P didn't see it, a student saw it and reported it to him. I also heard he retired, he wasn't fired. But I suppose all of my sources are wrong obviously.

The university's board of trustees on Wednesday night fired Paterno, the winningest coach in major college football, and Spanier, effective immediately, a bombshell announcement that punctuated the gravity of the scandal.

Honestly, I can understand Joe Paterno's situation completely. He was informed by a student about it, what was he supposed to do? He wasn't even an eye witness, he was just informed of it. Who's to say the student was a reliable source? Why didn't the student go to the police? Also, you can understand why Joe Paterno went to his superiors instead of the police, he would have gotten fired if he would have called the police, I assure you. He was looking to keep his job by not going to the police. I'm sure any other head coach in the NCAA would have done the same, if they were really interested in keeping their job. I'm not saying what the assistant coach did was right, nor am I saying that the coverup wasn't wrong, but I don't feel Joe Paterno was morally wrong in this case. He did what any NCAA program would expect their head coach to do in a situation like that.

I don't think he should have been fired. He did what he was supposed to. Why didn't the guy who actually saw it report it to the police and penn state? Doesn't make sense to me.

Paterno was informed of the situation by a graduate assistant, not a student. Who happens to be on the coaching staff right now. I'm not sure why Joe Paterno would have been fired by notifying the police.

This alleged situation occurred in 2002, on the Penn State campus. Jerry Sandusky had been retired since 1999. What they said to Sandusky essentially was, "Don't do it here."

I think there are a lot of people to blame, including Paterno.
