So yea, I just switched over to Linux Mint 8 (x64 version) from Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and it is quite nice.

Though I am still confused with Linux, it's really nice.

Anyone else using Linux Mint or Linux in general?

Well I use opensuse, but I find linux mint alright.

Why you switched to it from windows 7 I will never understand though.

No more Norton
No more Spybot
No more Malwarebytes
No more defragmenting tool
No more registry cleaners

Just to name a few. 😛

xD....if your hoping to get away from viruses and such...then youve been fooled, because there are viruses for almost every OS..

Congrats (this is coming from an Ubuntu user, from which Linux Mint is based off of). As long as you realize that you can't always just download something and expect to install it, you'll be fine 😉.

All you'll need is Mint Software Manager (I guess that's your Synaptic Package Manager). You also forgot to talk about Linux's efficiency and its power with less.

Fixed your post there Josh. There are viruses for EVERY os, not most. Also Linux has the LEAST amount of viruses for a OS. 😉

Thanks for the fix daniel....but Im sure there are some non public OS's out there that cant be infected.

I also bet they are based of some sort of OS... There has probably been everything added to a OS and a virus for just about anything.

Two Words.. Common Sense

Oh and for any linux distro you DO still need a defragmentation tool and a cleaner tool.
🙂.

I am quite sure there is no virus or malware for open solaris or haiku  .

No. Linux filesystem is more efficient in placement of files than Windows, and doesn't need a defrag tool. Also, there is no "registry" on linux, so no registry cleaner needed.

Never heard of them  but I bet there is, there are private viruses for everything. If not it will and can be aranged. 😉

Thanks. 😀 I know, I'm learning how to install/uninstall/remove things via terminal and the SPM.

Wow you are becoming a fanboy already... sad.

Any freaking os needs defragmenting. Sure it takes longer to get fragmented, but it still does!!

Oh and I bet you didn't know this, but Linux Mint comes with ext4 filesystem you have risk of curroption of files with size larger then 512kb.

Oh and it doesn't need a registry cleaner sure, but with all the unused config files you do need a cleaner. Bleachbit is best for this.

Linux needs a cleaner tool? No it doesn't.
Linux needs defragmentation? No it doesn't.
We have servers in our office all running variations of Linux and have never cleaned or defragmented them. I have never cleaned out or defragmented my laptop nor the desktop at work. As long as you take care of your machine, you wont need to.

Actually, I'm using ext4 and haven't had a problem with files larger than 512 KB at all on multiple systems and portable storage and haven't heard of this from any colleagues/friends who use ext4 either. And finally, no he isn't becoming a fanboy, he is enjoying his new choice, so stop acting like a plonker.

Wow you are a moron enough said...

EVERY FUCKING OS NEEDS A DEFRAGGER. You know why... every filesystem gets fragmented.

It also does need a cleaner tool... you know why... cause with each removal files get left behind. Like the config files.

You are being a fanboy you know why... fanboys refuse to accept problems...

I have been using linux for many years now. Like any os it has problems. They don't get fixed by ignoring them...

You can both fight over this, but its pretty much useless. Both Sides are right. If you are on a low resource computer than your going to need a cleaner/defragger to clean up the system. You need this, because as twitch said config files and other crap is left behind and trust me a lot is left behind.

On the other hand if you have a high resource computer you wont need a cleaner or defragmenting tool. It also depends on what the user chooses to do. If he would like to save some space and get the little bit of performance boost he/she could then they have that choice. If they could care less, because there comp is more than enough then they don't have too.

Also, about the ext4 file system it may be slightly superior in dealing with fragmentation, but if you install windows on SSD it will be just as good as the ext4 format.

That is true orc the better your computer is the less likely you need to defrag.

I guess I get all grouchy because I am in school getting my a certification. So when I am wrong my teacher lets me know lol.
