What are your guidelines on your forum to language? Do you allow your members to swear? I allow my members to swear. I personally dont care about the language since its part of everyday life.

When my forum was still around, I limited the language a bit to avoid writing in numbers or using swear words. Coming from a culture which does not approve that kind of attitude, I did the same with the forum. As I grew up and visited more forums and websites, I realized cultures were different everywhere else. Some people might be comfortable using and reading such words, others don't. At this point I'm still uncomfortable if someone writes swear or vulgar words without censoring, but if it's in *** then I can still tolerate it.

I personally think it should still be limited, because written language is more sensitive and it may leave the wrong impression to certain people because of their background.

I don't allow it. It'll just cause issues in the long run. Keep that kind of language away from a forum.

Sounds good. Would'nt members just find a secret way to swear though if you block cuss words? Ive seen that happen on forums.

Tell me how it happened, I couldn't imagine that yet, haha. I wonder if it's possible to block that secret way too.

They would find ways around the censorship. Say for the 'S' word. They would put like Sh!t or Sh1t...things like that.

I allow members to swear so long as it isn't directed at each other (ie. I had a sh!tty day at work, etc) or if it's not overly excessive. So far it hasn't caused any problems.

Yea I allow my members to swear as long as they aren't swearing at each other and using them as insults to one another. So far so good.

I censor it entirely on my forum. It was once brought up to remove it, but a few members said they don't feel comfortable about the idea of visiting my board to see people cussing freely in their posts, plus it's rare anyone actually does swear on my board so I may as well just keep it on and avoid any future potential instances of a user being offended when it gets posted uncensored on the off chance someone decides to use it.

As for getting around the filters? Sure, people can do that but that's no different to ignoring other limitations such as posting excessively sized images in your signature or worse, putting up a fast flashing image that has the chance to invoke a seizure. All it ends up with in the end is having the offending content dealt with, and if necessary, the member in question gets either a verbal warning, or an actual infraction on their account. If a site has censors, they're there for a reason, which is to not post uncensored swear words. Not some childish challenge of what creative ways people can get around them.

Excessive language is not tolerated. Minimal is typically fine.

I see. I agree with Moonface's answer. I would've asked the poster to edit it out, or do so myself. I don't think it is right to do it in such way if the forum guidelines clearly state that using such words is not allowed.

I don't mind, i support freedom of speech as long it doesn't target a particular user in order to insult him/her, well, some people when swearing, they use **** to censor something either sexual or something is not appropriate for a forum, i have 0 tolerance to sexual words or swear words those are related to them.
anyway, i don't want to censor every single word, it is so tiring and doesn't help me at all.

allowing words like jurk, dumb, f*ck etc on forum

do u allow your Forum Members to post Words like jurk, dumb, f*ck Etc Etc on forum ? all Wrestling forums allow members to use such words but what about your forum ?

Re: allowing words like jurk, dumb, f*ck etc on forum

Forbidding the use or jerk and dumb is....well, dumb. Profanity I can understand, but not such simple and petty insults as dumb and jerk. If you ban those, you may as well ban stupid, idiot, etc. as well, which then just becomes a double edged sword when someone wants to call something stupid.

Re: allowing words like jurk, dumb, f*ck etc on forum

i don't know what should i do coz i am running a WWE/Wrestling Forum.

Hey there,

I've merged two similar topics as the content is essentially the same. I apologize for any inconvenience but this way, you'll have more input to base your discussion around. 🙂

I think it depends what kind of forum you run, the target audience and the staff. We cannot please everyone at the same time but arrangements can be made.

In the Zelda forum I used to help swearing is allowed because most members are of age.

In my Zelda forum I censor the words and frown upong swearing because I consider the games are in general "E" so I think in accordance we should keep the content a broad as possible. I also have gotten many young members. Now, I don't get people in trouble for typing swear words because I understand people getting carried away. I think many understand the idea of keeping the forum clean and if they slip most words get filtered by the *Navi* censor. I just keep adding to the filter if it is "new". It is a fun way to deal with the situation.

As long as people aren't using swear words towards any other user, I would say that it's perfectly fine. They're just words after all...

I think it's fine, unless people are bashing each other. My members hardly post swear words though, and usually the only time they are used are in private forums so guests can't see it. If every other word in their post contains a swear word, then I may talk to the member but I wouldn't outright give them a warning or anything.
