Website Name: Languavel
Website Link: http://forum.languavel.net
When was your website founded?: Late October 2014
Which would you like?: (No Official Review | Standard Review | Advanced Review) Advanced Review
Notes:

There might be some bugs, we just installed our custom theme.

  • First off, you have some sort of a portal on the right hand side of the forum that I can't see on phone. I'd recommend either fixing this or removing it entirely.
Some of your forum descriptions have random parts in full caps. I don't see a problem with one or two words in full caps, but all of the different words in full caps looks unprofessional.
I don't like the chat box. It will detract posts away from your forum, making the stats look bad, then no one is using it. I'd recommend it be removed.
At the top: there are 2 buttons (home and forum) that lead to the same place, I would either make a blog type home page (like on FP) or remove the "Home" button.

Languavel is a very unique forum that will succeed if activity is raised and a few minor things are fixed. I wish you and Languavel the best of luck going forward.

First Impressions

Since you gave your link in the OP as forum.languavel.com, I'll be reviewing that link and not your homepage linked in your signature. When I first land on the forum index, I like what I see. You've got a fitting (custom) theme that works well color wise. The colors of the header and category headings are easy on the eyes and look nice. The background is fitting for your niche but isn't too distracting. Too many forums use photo backgrounds that slow down the forum or distract from the board's content, but you've done well in this. I'll stop with first impressions there, since I'll cover the rest in your other sections. Good job!

Excellent

Design Quality

As I mentioned, I really like the design of your forum. It's custom and unique to your forum, so that's definitely a plus for you to help you stand out. The main part of your board (with the forum sections and two sidebars) being off center is a little distracting and unordinary, but I see why you did it so you can show off more of your background photo which makes sense. If possible, maybe condense down to one sidebar instead of two so you can center the layout and still show your background enough? It's not a huge issue though, so overall your design is good.

Good

Site Statistics

You have 63 members and 3,258 posts (in 680 threads). This is pretty good, but seeing as you've been for a few months now, I'd like to see a bit more. On the plus side though, your posts are pretty evenly spread out across your forum sections so it's nice to see that your off topic sections aren't getting all the love. You seem to have a community that truly does like discussing other countries and travel, which is great. Definitely keep that up and continue focusing on content in those niche areas! On the negative side, however, only four of the several forums on your index have been posted in today or yesterday. This doesn't look so hot to guests or even returning members, as it makes your forum look inactive and doesn't encourage people to post (since they will assume they won't get a reply to any post they make). As an admin, you should focus on posting in this less active forums and have your staff team do the same.

Staff Professionalism

Looking around your forum, I can't seem to find your staff list. If you have one somewhere, it's not clear where it's at or linked at. If you don't have one, definitely add one - either in a topic or a forum webpage. It's nice to know who your staff members are and who your other admins are in case you aren't online or someone doesn't feel comfortable contacting the root admin (it does happen...). Looking at the staff posts and guidelines topics I could find, I didn't see any problems with professionalism though and you personally seem to be very professional on the board. Just work on showing your staff team and adding a staff page.

Good

Originality

Your forum is definitely original, I can't say I've seen many other forums based around your niche. Although I have seen a few over the years, few have been laid out as neatly and have lasted as long with as much activity as you seem to have. I have no complaints here, it's refreshing to see a site that gets an "excellent" in the originality category! 😀

Excellent

Site Structure

Overall, your site structure works and fits well with your niche. However, there are a few forum changes I'd suggest making. First, in your travel category, some of those forums can be combined to make them more active and save space on the index. Primarily, I would combine Family and Business Travel. I would also do something with Trip Tips, Living/Studying Abroad and Gadgets/Gizmos - either make them sub forums of another forum or combine them in some way. They aren't the most active and don't really need to be on the index in my opinion. Down in the Lounge category, you should also look into combining some of those or at least making some sub forums of other forums to save space. This is an off topic category not related to your niche so it doesn't really need to be as big as your other categories.

Good

Grammar & Spelling

As a forum dedicated to language, I would expect to find few, if any, errors on your forum. Fortunately, that is the case here. I don't see any glaring mistakes in your descriptions, posts, etc. (not including other member posts since you have little control over that). My one complaint is the use of ALL CAPS words in your forum description. I know you're doing it to make those words stand out, but it can come off as obnoxious or yelling to some people and isn't necessary. Use bold or other HTML mark up to emphasize those capitalized words rather than caps locking them.

Good

Final Remarks
I think you have a great forum here with a lot of potential. Work on some minor things that are likely just oversights as well as your general activity from day to day and you've got a fabulous forum here. Well done!

Will talk to staff about this, and see how/if our stats change. I just installed it a week or so ago. It is only available to use after 15 posts, and I have to accept members.

Fixed. Home now goes to our website.

Thanks for your feedback. 😉<br /><br />-- Tue Jan 27, 2015 3:07 pm --<br /><br />Fixed everything included in Geoffrey's review, besides the sideboxes (requires code edits so holding off for now, but will fix it).

I left one all-caps word in a forum description ("Languavel Welcome Center") , but used html coloring for the rest to make them stand out. How does it look now?

    Thanks. 🙂

Here are a few quick points I noticed, PM me or message me on skype for more details!

Organisation
Overall, it's great! The only lacking point here is the form sections. They are not properly lined up correctly and it throws me off a bit.

Spelling/Grammar
Viewing your site, I do not come across any quick spelling and or grammar errors within the first home page.

Thanks for the review. 🙂 Will be changing the forums around when I get the sideboxes formatted correctly.

Hey Cierra,

I think the main landing page (not the forum) is a bit bland, but it's the forum that we're reviewing.

The forum itself looks clean for the most part. I'm not a fan of the colored backdrop of staff usernames, but that's just me. Your forums are nice and simple; allowing users who want to search of Travel Gadgets to quickly find that on the index. Same with languages. 🙂

You also seem to have broken images for "Immersion Excursion" (awesome name, by the way) and "Specialized Travel," which makes the index look a bit off-center.

In addition, you have an Adverts forum which isn't really needed for a travel website. Too often, people think that they need to include one of these to attract other webmasters to their forum, but it's better to attract the people who will enjoy your topic without having to advertise their own website too.

And as others have said, I love the backdrop! 😀

Getting a custom website designed soon, it will match the forum. 🙂

Changed staff colors, and reduced the background a lot, so there's no "glow".

I did not add those images yet, but noted. Advert section hidden to everyone except premium and staff, for now, will see how it goes. Might remove it.

Thanks for the review. 😉

Most custom theme bugs are now fixed. Sideboxes have also been re-arranged a bit.<br /><br />-- Sat Mar 07, 2015 7:18 pm --<br /><br />Bumping this up.

Website has been designed (though not complete), and forums have been re ordered. Any more feedback?

I really loved the background. The colors are really bright and make website look good.

We have made a lot of changes, any other feedback? 🙂

I love the header and the background. Fits your niche and looks really good too. The footer needs improving as it is quite big but there is very little in it. Maybe add some information to it like info about the site, contact us details, news etc.

I really like your theme. It really clean and creative, while at the same time it fits really well with your forum's genre. The only real suggestion I have is to shorten up your footer. The footer has a lot of unused space in it. You could either add some links to the homepage, rules, ect. But that's already covered well by your top navigation bar. It'd look better if you just made it a little smaller.

Good luck. 🙂

Languavel's forum looks like a nice place. I don't normally like tabbed forums, but with Languavel's organization it helps to show what kind of content the forum offers without being annoying.

Design is also good. The header has much space next to the logo; feels kind of empty there. Maybe you can put something there? Tools at the top navigation bar can probably fill in the space, for example. I also see what others above said about footer, it definitely needs to be made smaller.

You may want to add a default avatar image to guest accounts, though, so it won't break the layout. Although I'm not sure if this is achievable with MyBB. And you may want to hide 'Staff Hub' tab from guest view at least, since we can't see anything there anyway.

Great forum, Cierra. Good luck! 😀

Hi there! 😀

Before I get into the forum itself, I found this small little bug or something of that sort in the name of your forum.

qTZVUlf.png

Some might not notice it, but I'm pretty weird when it comes to all this type of stuff. It looks like the forum description or something of that sort, maybe seeing how that can be removed completely.

Going into the forum itself, I see that you have tab menus for the various forum sections that you have. The last one that I see is the Staff Hub. I'm not sure if it was left there on purpose, or was accidental. Either way, I think that those sections should be left hidden rather than hiding all the sections and leaving the section visible in the tab menu, as it seems like a bit of a tease in some form. Removing it would be the best bet.

I also looked at all the links you have on the navigational bar you have above the logo. Your Sponsorship page just doesn't look right being a Google Docs document like that. It just comes off a bit unprofessional and would look better on a makeshift .php file. At the bottom the Admin Team list looks to be outdated since I'm not seeing R44 on Staff anymore.

I'm not sure why this is out of place, as the names don't seem to be a factor in pushing it up. In actually all honesty, some of those sections aren't really needed on the forum index. I would see about cutting it down to the necessary meat that most people will look at, such as number of replies and top posters. The reputation and most thanks statistics could be moved to a separate page that holds all the statistics.

Best of luck with your forum! 😀
