My laptop is getting a bit older and it's starting to get hotter the longer I use it. I have a question concerning ways of preventing it from overheating, particularly cooling pads.

I've heard that cooling pads are both helpful but can also be harmful. In one way, they provide a steady stream of air to the underside of your laptop to help cooldown everything. However, I've also heard numerous stories regarding cooling pads blowing dust into the laptop which seems a bit counter productive.

In your opinion, are the downsides to cooling pads just heresy? Is there a real concern with that?

I have been using a Cooling pad for an older laptop, and it works great at keeping it cool while I use it.

Dust will enter your laptop even if you don't have a cooling pad because your laptop has a cooling fan which suck air from your room to cool your laptop.

Maybe you should bring your laptop to a computer repair store to have them clean the dust out of your laptop, or clean the dust out yourself if you know how to open and repair your laptop which is harder than cleaning dust out of a desktop PC.

^This.

I've used several cooling pads over the years, and I personally find laptop cooling pads to be very handy. They can help a lot and can definitely hepl prevent issues with overheating.

There are ways to clean out the fans, but if you don't want to do this for now - I would highly suggest get a laptop cooling pad.

Try cleaning out the dust if it is overheating. Just remove the back cover use some compressed air to clean it out then reassemble.

Dusts can be removed after, an overheating laptop can be very ahrmful long term.

Your laptop fans also can be failing after many years of constantly spinning for many hours a day since laptop fans uses blower style fans which maybe less durable than the regular ball bearing fans found on most desktop computers.
