Will give 500 FP to someone if they suggest a possible fix that works for me. I tried to include as much information as I could. Compaq CQ61 laptop.

So just out of the blue I go to turn on my laptop and it powers on as usual but the screen doesn't come up. The caps lock and number lock lights just blink and the power button stays blue as normal and the wifi indicator lights up.

The screen shows no light up at all. Just as if it were powered off.

Anyone know any fixes or what the problem is?

The battery for the laptop is pretty much dead and used up, could that cause the screen not to come on though?

I tried plugging it into a external monitor and it the monitor just went into hibernation.

Additional quote from myself:

@TH, nope. It literally shows nothing at all. Everything powers on and lights blink but the screen itself has nothing going on. I plugged it into an external monitor and it the external monitor went into hibernations which makes me think its stuck in hibernation.

I unplugged it and just shut the screen down w/o powering it off which also makes me think possible hibernation stuckage.

@Blue, thanks for the link. Have had the battery and plug out for a while now since I read about that a little earlier. Didn't try pressing power out to remove the static, going to try it now.

Thanks guys.

Edit:

Tried the link instructions, no result.

The caps lock light and touchpad light blink routinely and all the lights come on, just no screen action ;/.

I once had a HP laptop which would not boot until I replaced the RAM. If you have two RAM sticks in your laptop, you can take out one, and just take out the broken stick and run your laptop off one stick of RAM.

To find the bad stick of RAM, take out both sticks, and test each stick of RAM individually to see if both, 1, or no RAM stick work.

It's the screen that's not lighting up. My laptop ran perfectly fine which makes me highly doubt it being the RAM, thanks for the suggestion though.

Did you drop the laptop? I've broken screens before. Also laptop can be very crappy at times. Motherboards etc can just go out at any time.

Also you mentioned the batteries are low, charge them? Plug in the power cord and see if that is the problem.

The battery has no life in it at all. The laptop will run for like 2 minutes with the battery in. It loads a suggestion screen to switch the battery every time I started it and to consider replacing the battery when it was on.

I'm going to buy a new battery for it and see if that helps at all.

This could be due to overheating and not shutting down your PC. I am having this problem right now with my PC but it only does it every now and again, try replacing the fan and get better airflow to your PC. Then once you have your PC elevated off a surface try holding the power key and turning on the power after 10 seconds.

It sounds like the motherboard has gone bad. Either that or the graphics card which is integrated, which means you will need to replace the mobo.

Perhaps you should ask an expert, and not this forum. If you take all of the suggestions here by the end of the day you will have bought enough parts to make two new computers.

Thanks for the replies guys, it got me looking at possible solutions so I'm going to split the FP between the 4 of you who gave constructive replies. I'll give some bonus FP to Froggy for suggesting the RAM in the first place 😉.

Am happy it's fixed, thanks guys.

Edit: Sent out all the FP and +Rep'ed Froggy for a successful suggestion. Props to FP, posted this on several forums and this is the only site where I received constructive feedback.

This happened to me with my old IBM T42. It turned out it was due to the laptop being overloaded with information. If the harddrive is full then it can cause the system to compensate by not running some programs, for some reason the screen usually goes first, this is why connecting an external screen doesn't help. After starting and restarting it many times I got it working long enough to get my things off it, but once this has happened the laptop has pretty much had it im afraid.
