Least useful promotion methods

Spamming. If people spam then nobody will visit their forum. I feel you need to build up a reputation with interesting posts before you post your forum. If people see you posting intresting stuff - they'll join the forum to see more of it...

To me there is only one un useful way and that is spamming. Not sure bout anything else.

That one you used for here, I think it was called TrafficDigger.

Things like that anyway.

posting an ad, and never returning to that forum

it just shows the community you visited, you have no interests in their community, so why should they get involved with yours, no matter how promising the forum is.

^hcfwesker said a decent one.

You must remember, "spam" can mean everything from posting your url many times to mass emailing adverts. It covers a wide range of things not to do -~-

Yes, What he said! -surprise-

Going on other people's forums and PMing members with advertisements. This is just plain aggravating for the members and the staff that have to deal with you stealing away their members and your site gains a negative reputation. Trust me, DON'T advertise through PMs.

Completely agree with this. It's happened fairly often here in the past too ~neutral~

On top of that, I would say sending out "monthly newsletters" are very aggravating for members. There isn't a lot worse than opening your Emails to find your inbox full of messages such as:

"Come on down to MyForum, kick back, have a coffee, relax and unwind. We now have 1,000,000 posts, 4 members and a load of spam. Please welcome our new promotion team: Joe, Bloggs, and Dave.

This month we'll be holding abig post bonanza, come along and check it out. It will be awesome and you can win a super cool domain name!".

They go straight through me.

I don't mind worthwhile announcements via email like big achievements but not for small announcements. We haven't sent out a mass email for this forum for about a year now. In terms of other advertising forums that is very good.

Actually, I find this method very helpful. It got me over 600+ members on Fratal.org, and over 200 members on DarkFallForum.net

Sure, it may give your site a bad reputation, but for what, really? For advertising via PM? What harm could that be? "Don't go to that shitty forum, they PM advertise!!" Now obviously, you don't want to be constantly PM advertising on every forum you go to. Only ones that are related to your forum.

Yeah, we did it too and got a lot of members but the thing is that it's more of a respect thing. If anyone did that on my site I would ban them so I wouldn't want to be a hypocrite and do it anywhere else.

To tell you the truth, I have spent the most time on promotional forums, and yet have gotten very few members from them. I have gotten tons from Myspace, DeviantART, and Youtube and yet I have put very little time into those methods.

I will agree with others for Spamming & joining just to promote your forum. I used to have a rule against that when I first started as I had several members join ONLY to promote. They never came back. Now, I'm more lax & just hope they return the favor in promotion.
